Wonder if he caught something in the pen with my pigs. Saws got a lot of orange on it.

A lot of orange, indeed. It does have that Stihl starter handle on it though. Makes it a little easier to pull. :D

Hopefully all the basic parts will be here soon and we'll see how it runs. (If it passes pressure/vac test first)

These work wonderful in a 266.

That's purty, may have to stick one of those in it. I see it's still a full skirt design.

This has been a really informative thread. Honestly, one that I normally wouldn't pay much attention to since I didn't have a 266. But, last Sunday a 266 found its way to me. The top cover is faded a lot and I thought it may not be original, but after reading this, it may be. It's a 1986 266SE (on the recoil) but says 262XP on the top cover. It does have a Tillotson 224 carb like an XP. Pretty cool saw that I'm looking forward to getting running. I know one thing, this thing has some serious compression; or a poor starter design; or both, lol.

I’m just glad it wasn’t the “Special” Model.

This one is original P/C as far as I can tell, a little carbon streaking on ex side. But it's still feels healthy and I'll probably run it as is.
But If I do decide to replace piston...
I see that meteor offers one for the 266. And now I know that a 268 piston will interchange. But is the meteor 266 piston different from the 268?
Just wondering

It would appear so: I hope he bought a Husqvarna starter kit.

That’s funny the Stihl starter handle is better than the coarse thread lag bolt I used to test it.

On my 670 jonny when from the full skirt windowed to the slab sided/windowed piston weight was within a few grams bur throttle response went way up as well as in cut rpm.
I didn't compare weight, but my results were the same as yours

While on the subject... I've posted this somewhere before but this seems like a good spot to re-post.

A 288/242/42/etc module will work with the addition of a simple bracket.
Not that 288 modules are so much easier to find but it is another option if that
happens to be what you've got on hand.

Actually 288 modules are available, where 266 ones are not, other than AM. So far in a handful of 266's the AM is holding up, coils also. At thirty bucks each is more affordable when having to purchase. It's my belief that the 288 ones were better just for the simple fact that I have good working ones here and every 266/630/670 are junk and need replacement. This is a very good thing to know, thank you for sharing.

OEM 266 modules are available Steve, pricey, but available.

It would seem though that when I take the time to figure out which one has failed, the other is soon to follow on old original 266 ignitions. That much I do remember. And maybe it was price that steered me towards the AM. Hard to spend a pile of money on a firewood saw, folks just won't do it.
