Trying a copy of the updated clutch for the 61 through 272 series of saws. Should be ok if the springs don't come flying out of the clutch cover. Lol Can buy a couple dozen of these over the real deal. Will see if it is worth a few bucks or not.

Looks similar to a 372 clutch.

The coil spring 272 clutch seems stronger than a 372 clutch. More aggressive engagement and engages at lower rpm. At least that’s what I noticed. The clutch spider that holds shoes is also beefier on 272 clutch.

The guy that I recently rebuilt a 670 for said that saw was on its third or fourth set of clutch springs. I don't know if that's normal for these saws or he's just hard on stuff.

I've never had to replace the flat springs in a 372 or 385/390.

Maybe they are less durable looks aren’t everything. I think a 390 clutch has coil springs, at least some do. My 385 chassis has c clip.

Well, my old style was getting not just old but wore out as well, figured might as well see what the modern tech can do for and old dog. Might be a while before I get to try it, weather is not so good for a while.

I need to try a ported 266/268/272, I bet they run good for a old saw. I was impressed by a stock 272 with the useable torque it had.

This has been a really informative thread. Honestly, one that I normally wouldn't pay much attention to since I didn't have a 266. But, last Sunday a 266 found its way to me. The top cover is faded a lot and I thought it may not be original, but after reading this, it may be. It's a 1986 266SE (on the recoil) but says 262XP on the top cover. It does have a Tillotson 224 carb like an XP. Pretty cool saw that I'm looking forward to getting running. I know one thing, this thing has some serious compression; or a poor starter design; or both, lol.

Poor starter design on all the 266`s I have started, a chock full rope rotor helps but not enough to make them pull over easy.

I have a 630 with over 200psi and its a bear to start cold. Its impossible if you dont bump it over tdc first.
You do have to pull them with authority and setting the piston just past TDC gives one a bit of room to get the crank moving at a better speed before hitting TDC again. The 266 is quite light and will roll over in the hand even with a tight strong grip on the top handle, see many guys with a surprised look if not used to starting this model. I have a 266 that only had less than one tank of mix through it, not likely even set the rings yet and it bites just about everyone that tries to pull it over.

This one is original P/C as far as I can tell, a little carbon streaking on ex side. But it's still feels healthy and I'll probably run it as is.
But If I do decide to replace piston...
I see that meteor offers one for the 266. And now I know that a 268 piston will interchange. But is the meteor 266 piston different from the 268?
Just wondering

They used 3 different 50mm pistons. The 266 was a full skirt windowed piston, 268 open port has a slab sided piston with no windows, and a 268xp uses one similar to the 2nd one, but it has Windows.

If i remember corectly that 268 meator is the same piston i used in my jonny 670 build. Runs stronger then the windowed full skirt that came out. Throttle response was much improved.
