@Stump Shot
I have a few 670 cylinders here
The mahle is probably the most generic of the bunch. It has a combustion chamber like the 268 and average sized ports.

The KS has a combustion chamber like the mahle but had larger lower transfers and a step on the bottom of the exhaust port.

The gilardoni has a smaller combustion chamber large lower transfers and the step in the exhaust port as well.

I should have some pictures

I can get some ks pics but it's kinda in between the two.

Gilardoni, is definitely the hottest running of the 3 in stock form.

On the 67cc cylinders...
The 66 is an open port average cylinder.
The 266 is closed port Mahle, small Double D combustion chamber with smaller than average ports, very high compression.
The 268 is a open port made by Gillardoni and very well made at that, make lots of torque.
The 268XP is a closed port usually a Mahle with a large circular combustion chamber and average size ports.
The 670 is a closed port (KS?) and has a large circular combustion chamber with the largest ports of all them.

The 66 is like the 61's bigger brother and like the 61 a very solid saw.
The 268 and 268XP are the easiest and best of this bunch to get parts for and keep running.
The 266 is the lil hot rod of the group and the most different, and as long as its intake block is good, an excellent saw. An open windowed 268 replacement piston either OEM or Meteor wakes these saws up even more over the old style full circle windowed piston.
The 670 can really let it all hang out as long as its intake boot holds up. They were the Champ for sure. Otherwise very similar to the 268 in construction with a nicer carburetor than its orange cousins.

Anything you can think of to add to this @Spike60 ?
The 272 is just a 268 with a factory big bore kit and optional HD filter right?

That's pretty much it. The HD filter wan't on all 272's. But I think it was more of an upgrade from one to the other, rather than both being available at the same time. Early 272's had no deco either. And the 268XP never had it that I remember.

The 670 boot style intake is superior, and of course that's where the while line up went with the 3 series saws. There are 2 boots, 2 clamps, (wire and band). The necks on the cylinders are also a little different to accomodate them. Can be a litttle confusing.

Does anyone know if the pistons in the different 670 cylinders are the same? I have a junk pile build 670 Champ that has a Mahle cylinder but I don't know what the piston came out of. With no modifications and a stock base gasket the saw has 185 psi compression. It runs pretty good.

My mahle cylinders have had mahle pistons and my ks and gilardoni have had ks pistons.

Pistons fully interchange on the 670, 268XP, and 266XP. In OEM, all of them supersede up to part number 501659403. From the Mahle factory in Brazil.

266's originally came with a full skirt piston. Last I knew Forester had a decent copy of that one. Not sure about other windowed AM options. I know that most AM 50mm pistons for these saws are the open port style which don't work well at all in the closed port saws.

Meteor makes a 266 and a 268 fully windowed piston, always wanted to compare the two side by side but never have to actually see what if any difference there is between the two of them. They do have different part numbers so there must be a little something I'm not noticing. They do run well, even in the modified saws and are my piston of choice.

Changing to the full windowed piston in the 266 does give them a little boost in power. :)

Current OEM price is $108. Some sources have multipliers on all their pricing. What is the retail on the Meteor? I see Northwood Saw has them for $37.95

Definitely don't want to use those non windowed pistons.

Before the internet's it was a pia
To find parts sometimes
a jonsereds 920 piston for a guy
I called all over the state's
And had to settle for a golf
It's still running today.

Husky OEM pistons never dropped in price like the entire cylinder kits did 3-4 years ago. In some cases, the difference between the complete top end vs just the piston is as little as $20 at my cost. For only $20 over the cost of a piston, ya get a new cylinder? How could you not buy the whole kit at those numbers? Only in cases like the 266/268XP/670, where the cylinder is NLA, would the piston even be considered.

If a wiped 268XP came into the shop, $108 for a new piston vs $150 for a new 272 top end? Kind of a no brainer between those 2 choices. If the cylinder cleans up real nice, the Meteor becomes a sensible option.

Sad to see a pile of oem cylinders at a local butcher shop
Very little transfer on most.
They toss them and slap a am or oem on
Customers choice.
One of the worker's gets all the cylinders and builder's.

One in the middle is a 66 piston I believe. One on the bottom a 268 slab sided for the open port cylinder. Meteor has two for the 268.
They are all sold as 266 online
