Borrowed my bil's splitter for some elm.... dang, that's nasty stuff!
IMG_20221020_124346.jpg

Also, got a new saw in the mail yesterday that we've been testing out.... shindaiwa 492 I'm running a 20" .325 setup.
Nice and light, not the most amazing av, most of it's power is in the form of low end torque....
Near as I can figure out it's the same as the echo 4910, same carb, same coil, same piston & cylinder.... but idk....
So far I kinda like it.

Under the cover after 4 or 5 test cuts.... maybe not the best air filter system....

Years ago my Uncle would let me cut my firewood off his place. I cut down a good sized one and he came driving up, got out and said that’s a black gum. It’ll be hard to split. I was young, strong and stupid then. I said that’s ok, I’ll get it split. (I was splitting by hand then). Got the stuff home and hammered 2 steel wedges ALL the way flush. Never even phased that piece. Those wedges were stuck in that chunk until it dried out. Even then it took a saw and axe to get my wedges out. Nowadays I’m old, weak and still stupid but I have a hydraulic splitter now.
:)

Elm gives any splitter a workout! Human or machine!

I had never seen anything like elm before I moved down here....in the PNW the worst splitting wood is some of the second growth spruce, it's pretty stringy and super soft... but it's child's play compared to elm....
I made a video to show my brothers how bad it was, cause they couldn't believe it could be that bad!

Best to cut that when it’s dead & the bark is falling off or has just fallen off. It splits much better when it’s dry also.

Yeah, most of the elm we split today was pretty dry, and some of it split kinda okay, but there was one log that was really bad.
Btw, is it even any good for firewood? It seems really light in weight when its dry, kinda like cottonwood...

In my experience:That spaghetti split you have will burn fast & not throw much heat.

Usually fresh cut live elm splits like that & burns fast

Dead elm usually splits well & throws good heat.

It’s like burning two totally different species of wood.

I always get clinkers when I burn elm also, hard chunks of mineral deposits.

Slippery ( Red ) Elm is highly sought after around here. It will lay around several years before it starts to go bad.

American Elm looks like what you had & is good stuff if you get it before it gets punky.

Siberian Elms are good for shedding limbs & firewood in a pinch but I usually just send it to the brush pile.

Morning midlanders! Some 20 degrees warmer this am than yesterday. [emoji106]

Been trying to thin the herd but only getting ‘tire kickers’ on Facebook.

It's all winged elm I've got here, near as I can tell.
