I need help from someone with a good understanding of late model Homelite saws...in this case dressed in John Deere green...

What model Homelite is this? I'm pretty sure Fossil already schooled me once but I have not been able to located that information again.

Are there other Homelite models that were also dressed up in green? Does anyone have one in really nice condition they would be interested in letting go? This could include an Efco version. Asking for a customer...

If it's a 45 cc version it may be a Timberman. Back about 2003 I was a little thin on funds and wanted/needed a 20" chainsaw. Bought a Timberman not knowing any better, and it looks a lot like your JD. Actually not a bad saw, starts and cuts after sitting for years at a time, but should have never been paired with a 20" bar.

People buy with their eyes, so the guide bar is often too large in cheaper saws

Doing a bit of digging, this one is a little more complicated than the last one I did some digging and I'm making some assumptions.

The 45 cc Homelite Timberman looks to share the same plastics as the John Deere J3816.

Looking at the IPL (attached) for the Timberman, it shows the 38cc version using the same cylinder as the 45cc version. The 38cc verstion is UT10927 and the 45cc versions are UT10942 and UT10946.

Unfortunately I can't find any specs on the John Deere or Homelite bore and stroke.

That's about as close as I can get.

Just a side note digging inro my diminishing memory. Poulan 34XX, 38XX and the 40cc saws all used the same 40cc cylinder. Maybe a similar case with your John Deere.

My uncle had one of them because he was a homelite dealer back in the 80’s needless to say he could tell it wasn’t the homelite of old. John Deere had pretty much every homelite in green yellow over the time they owned them. I should have bought the homelite 250/300 in Deere trim up here when the dealer went out of business along with the super xl in Deere colors.

I have a green machines saw, but I think mine is a Tanaka rebrand.
The 350cs is definitely a bucket list saw for me, Leon's is in really nice shape there. I forgot to bid on one on eBay that went dirt cheap not too long ago.

I asked a John Deere saw guru. The 3816 is a homelite built saw. I stand corrected! He said it's the last John Deere saw made. The prior green ones were made by Efco. This doesn't answer the original question as to what homelite model it is but I enjoy saw trivia!

There was also i believe the model 61, an earlier John Deere saw made by Remington or whoever made the Remingtons and Montgomerywards at the time.

I ordered parts to repair the J3816 (brake handle, rear trigger handle) but unfortunately the rear handle was also broken when it arrived. This inspired me to have a look at some plastic Homelites in the attic and what do you know, I had a suitable donor saw on hand so that project is now complete. Thanks again to Tim for the inspiration.

On a completely different note, this one came in today. I already have a pretty good looking 26LCS in the display so if anyone is interested in a hard case project I have this one available.

The 26LCS shown above has found a new home in Oregon...

Today I have an SEZ on the bench, 160 PSI compression and a snappy blue spark. I went through the carburetor, diaphragms and gaskets are nice and supple, HS check valve works, metering needle holds pressure. Replaced the fuel line and fuel filter. Saw will start, pop a few times, then quit. Might restart again with the choke, might not.

I have cleaned the points, set the gap at 0.015", replaced the plug wire, flywheel key is in place and the flywheel is locked down tight. I have tried two different spark plugs with no change in behavior.

Any additional ideas would be appreciated.

Turns out the SEZ was very leaking at the crankcase cover and the cylinder to crankcase mount. I've put it aside for now.

Here's another John Deere branded Homelite, in this case a Super XL. It was pretty ugly to start with.

It was also locked up. During disassembly it spun over, then locked up again...

20260113_112346.jpg

Plain aluminum bore cylinder and chrome plated piston, I never know Homelite did that on a more sophisticated saw like this one.

20260113_112350.jpg

I have a volunteer helping me out each morning, he has been spending a lot of time cleaning parts.

20260113_112359.jpg

Unfortunately this one has a very bad seal on the PTO side (583080 and it is a most peculiar size, .655x.937 or 21/32 x 15/16. I used some vinyl tape when putting it together but the seal was just too far gone to work.

For now I decided to put it together as it is and keep it in the display. If I can find a good source for those seals I will acquire a few and get this saw back into working order. For now, it looks pretty good. We pulled that John Deere label off the damaged AF cover and put it on this one that came off the saw that donated the piston and cylinder for this project.

I did practice restoring the faded plastic from the damaged AF cover that came off the saw. Amazing what a little time with a heat gun will do.
