Yeah, I'll just replace them when they wear out. ;)

I have an idea for "renewable" bottom rollers, but I need access to a lathe. :)

Replacement bottom rollers, 10mm acetal/delrin plastic rod off eBay center drilled and cut to length.

I don't need the raker-roller too often anyway, but had I not lost one of the worn out rollers I would have cut off the tooth-roller section and reused the raker-roller section basically making a two part roller.
The raker-roller section sees much less wear than the tooth-roller section!

New approach making replacement rollers, I tried using a mill.

These are merely prototypes, material is some scrap steel piece, I did not have a mill bit under 10mm at hand so there is a fair amount of waste.
I will break/cut them out and give them a try.

The next ones I mill I'll try using some kind of plastic, maybe melt down HDPE scrap into a square-ish block.

Cut out with an angle grinder (next batch I'll let the mill bit go deeper so there'll be less material left)

Further processed with a bench grinder and a Stihl flat file

Not bad at all, they are a little bit longer but the mounting screws have enough length to accommodate them.

BTW, the Acetal/Delrin rollers are holding up very well!
This is with about half a dozen additional chains sharpened on the rollers.

Huh, I completely forgot about this idea! o_O

I will make prototypes on a mill next chance I get. :)

VERY impressive!
Could you cover these with some tape or heat-shrink tubing now to protect the files against unnecessary wear on the metal? Maybe make the rollers slightly undersized and cover them with sacrificial tubing, rather than replacing the rollers each time?

Mr. Philbert, I like Your thinking! :)

Making undersized OD rollers and then cover them with nylon or rubber tubing was my intention.
I just forgot about that idea when I made these rollers.

I have some heat shrink tubing, I will look whether I have a diameter to actually fit the bottom roller OD.

Impressive thinking!

Any future steel rollers I will play with various bottom roller OD's for testing purposes! :)

8.9mm nylon tubing, once stretched over a suitable OD steel roller it should work out to the 10mm 3/8" FastFiler bottom rollers. :)

Steel replacement rollers with undersized bottom roller section (the ones on the right are to specs).
DSC05178.JPG

Nylon tubing over undersized bottom roller section resulting in an OD larger about 0.3mm than stock/OEM - should still work fine though.

Made some steel side rollers, spec sized, undersized for renewable rollers, oversized for alternative filing angle testing.
Testing is on hold.

Cut and broken out after milling

Roughed in on my small bench grinderDSC05188.JPG

Finish with a Stihl flat file
