Trying to mow another neighbors yard yesterday after splitting my Deere John was giving me a fit of intermittent stalling like the gas was shut off.
So under the "knife" it went.
Then went back out to finish mowing after I found the problem.
After 13 1/2 hrs on my day off it was beer:30!

Barnes X, GMX, or Triple shocks (or a good old Partition or Accubond) ought to do in a 257 Weatherby, I'd just try for either spine or lung shots. Given the number of Elk who've succumbed to a .243, 257 Roberts, and .25-06, the Weatherby will do fine, when used appropriately. I will likely end up wit a .280AI or a 30-06 simply because, BUT, anything (for Me) between a 6.5x55 Swiss to a .375 H&H would do fine.

Funny you mention the 6.5 Swede and 375 as the only two Winchester 70's I own are in those two calibers.

Its going to be interesting to see how .277 fury turns out as a hunting round. Even being small caliber the first thing it ever killed was a Elk. But its a pissin hot round even on factory loads, so thats probably not much of a surprise.

Well, given how many Elk have been piled up with a .270 Win, and .270 Weatherby, I'd say that the Fury should do fine, given it's ballistics out of a short barrel. It may achieve what big Green meant to do with the 660 line of rifles years ago...

I will own a Model 70 someday, hopefully a pre-'64. I'd want it in one of handful of calibers: 6.5x55, .270, .30-06, .300 H&H, 338 Win Mag, or 375 H&H... A .243 wouldn't hurt my heart, but I already have a fine Ruger 77 MKII Sporter Stainless in that caliber, that's downed several big bodied bucks with 1 round each... Not much point in another.

I had the chance to buy a very nice Winchester 70 in 300 H & H for $600, I wish I'd done it. Later I bought a nice Remington 721 in that caliber. But the 721's twist unfortunately likes 150 grain bullets and not 180 or heavier. I believe the Winchester prefers the 180 - 220 grain pills.

I believe the 70 did have a tighter twist. Big green had the same problem with their 6mm, vs the Winchester .243...

Love me some Model 70, currently own 3, was 4 but traded my pre64 270 toward my loader. Regret it but I needed the tractor and it sealed the deal.
Don’t discount the new Model 70’s when you’re shopping, I have a new Featherweight 30-06 and the quality is top notch. The Model 70 trigger has always been decent and very easy to adjust but the trigger in my FN Featherweight is unreal. I never understood what it meant when a trigger was described to “break like glass” until I got that rifle. My other two are a 1972 30-06 and a 2001 Sporter 300WSM.

6.5 × 54 Though in pictures it would be easily mistaken for a Swede. No belt so not one of the shorter Magnums. I thought the Swede had more taper than the Manlicher as well. Or wait a minute 6.5 × 53 Carcano?

I use the 168's myself and have not been able to duplicate their performance with handloads. I had the same powder, bullet, fed match cases trimmed, fed match primers. I tried micrometer dies and factory crimp dies to no avail. I read once that there was speculation of fairy dust sprinkled on then and in inclined to believe it. By the way only use these for paper as they are a terrible hunting round from what I've read and seen.

I don't use this to hunt. Only steel target shots for now. Food around here comes up pretty close to you so a bow or shotgun is adequate.
