If you;r not using a cbn wheel , which i recommend you will need to radius/ clean
the wheel with the Stihl dressing brick, It is a 4 inch granite looking stone with a
valley in one end that you place your wheel into as its running rocking back and forth
fora few seconds to clean and re profile with there is Stihl specific metal profile guage
that is used to refferance the profile to

The cbn wheels are specific 1 for 3/8, and one for 325
of course the wheels dont even need to be profiled but do tend to load up
with dirt and metal filings and a wire brush with the wheel turning does great
during use and I clean off after use with dawn dishsoap and rinse /dry off of the
machine
Do both CBN wheels clear the rakers ok when using Stihl's recommended presets?

Couple of useful Norton products, Norbide profile stone top , Cleaning stone bottom for CBN wheels . Diamond tool is preferably the tool of choice for dressing,
I once bought a dressing brick from a machinist supply house: was too fine. For some reason they supply really coarse (24 grit!) carborundum (silicon carbide) bricks withe the Oregon and Tecomec grinders (for standard, vitrified wheels).

Any tips on using the Stihl dressing block and the profile gauge? I expect it'll need a delicate approach.
Is profiling needed frequently? Stihl recommends a different right side radius than the left.
I was watching a youtoob vid the other day, which a guy was setting up a usg to sharpen hedge cutting blades. Youtood vid here
He pointed out the profile you mentioned and the correct side it should be on to sharpen the blades, as the 3/8 wheel is used for both chains and blades,

As for just using a 3/8 wheel on chains imo it wouldn’t matter if the wheel was symmetrical

Which brand do you use? P/N? You have the USG I believe.
I use the ( LM sharpening wheels ) out of minnesota I believe
they are superior to other brands .as the substrate is
electroplated to the steel blank the Stihl dealer supplied
them with my machine .I have called Larry ( owner) on
occasion and he,s a good guy to get info from

I don't see an actual website for them, only various business listings.

Good mornin
I have been recently considering a grinder for no other reason than just because.
I have been hand filing for the last 40+ years with no real complaints other than age and eye sight has me wearing magnifiers over my readers to get the results I desire. anymore I probably only go through maybe 5-6 chains per year so no real high usage divided between 16-24" chains in both 3/8 and .325

While looking at various possibilities Super Jolly, I checked FB marketplace for used and came up with Evo for $200 used or a Tecomec 50/60 compact NIB for $135, What am I getting with a $400 Super Jolly that I would be giving up by going with the $135 50/60 compact?

I’m not sure what the 50/60 Compact is. Tecomec has many models.

The Super Jolly has a hydraulic chain clamp: more moving parts to fail, but an advantage for high-volume users.

The EVO, I believe, has a lower power motor, and some awkward adjustments.

Search eBay for the Tecomec Compact grinder sold by ArcherPlus for $230, shipped. It is a basic, full powered, full sized grinder. See if it is the same one, and compare it to your $135 deal.

Good info, I knew the Tecomecs were the way to go but I didn’t realize they had a 5series for 230. That’s still a great price.

I checked the Ebay Archer posting and the best I can tell it is the same thing CT50-60 $230 and someone local has one listed on Facebook Marketplace for $135. 1686795866141.png1686795866141.png

Looks like it does not do the 10° ‘down angle’. I don’t normally use it anyway.

Sounds like a good deal.

Wonder how he conducts business with no website? I’ve tried calling three times with no luck, even left a message.

I got two of the L.M CBN wheels today for the USG. Very nice substrate on steel blanks. I think I'll use the factory raker wheel, as they are cheap. Damn thing is still in the box. It's been so dang hot I haven't felt like spending time in the shop setting it up.
