I have to agree with Stump Shot - I have never seen (or at least noticed) that extra 'tooth' in the gullets of the STIHL, Oregon, and Archer chains shown. They each look like they were ground with a wheel that is too narrow, like on the Harbor Freight grinders. All new chain that I have seen has a smooth, continuous transition from the top plate cutting edge, along the full sweep of the gullet, aup up the depth gauge. That is what I try to replicate when sharpening / reconditioning chain.

I've been seeing it for a few years on stihl chain.

Here is a chain that I took from the garbage pile from a junk saw that came to me, and sharpened on the grinder. This is just an every day kinda chain, all I did was set the grinder depth down to the flat part between the tooth and raker. Notice I did not take the time to go back and get the little hump out from a sharpening prior to me. This chain cut pretty fast today in Norway Pine that I was testing the saw in. So for an every day kinda work chain for the woods you really don't have to do anything real fancy to get a good fast cut. For hand filers, just take a couple swipes with down pressure to get down to that level, then sharpen tooth as normal to get a hook. If I decide to use this chain for mare than testing a saw, I will go back and smooth the transition area some more.
