Haha.... thanks mate, but the first 3 photos are new unused chains. I just thought I would show how the expensive Stihl chain is actually the worst of the lot.
I dont own or use an electric sharpener..... I only hand file.

Looks to me like they have been ground by somebody(maybe where you bought them?) . Well same story, no matter how it got there, get that gullet out with your file and they should improve for you.

THe stihl chain came from a stihl dealer, the Oegon came from a seller on Ebay in Australia and the chinese chain was strait off the roll, I watched it get put together.

Reading this thread has opened my eyes to things like clearing the gullet. I thought I would show how bad the new chains I had hanging on the wall were once I looked closer.
I usually run a file over any new chain to clean it up first

Why mate?
I am interested in your thoughts
Oregon.......never had much luck with cutter longevity or consistency off the roll. Not to mention it stretches like a bastid.
Chinese.....well....its Chinese. I wouldn't trust the tie straps. Keep a close eye on em.

Stihl square ground is hit or miss on quality worse than oregon the last couple years. I won't buy it any more since I don't have a grinder.

Tried lots of different brands of chains, only one I had to give up on and not run any longer was the Forester brand. It's now residing underneath the apple tree, doing the only positive contribution I could think of. The bar I bought with it was no better,(Pro bar my eye) it's on its way to the smelter. Maybe it will come back as something better.

I just went and had a closer look at a few different chains and the differences are shocking. . . .Thoughts

I'm still shocked by paying $90 for a 30" loop of chain (maybe Australia really was settled by criminals?).

Looks to me like they have been ground by somebody . . .

I have to agree with Stump Shot - I have never seen (or at least noticed) that extra 'tooth' in the gullets of the STIHL, Oregon, and Archer chains shown. They each look like they were ground with a wheel that is too narrow, like on the Harbor Freight grinders. All new chain that I have seen has a smooth, continuous transition from the top plate cutting edge, along the full sweep of the gullet, aup up the depth gauge. That is what I try to replicate when sharpening / reconditioning chain.

EDIT: fixed fat finger error on Stump Shot's name (no offense intended!)

The Carlton chains I've used seemed to be hardened more so than other brands. I've ruined a couple files on em.
