The hd2 seems easier to blow out with air gun than the old kufner air filter that was on there. The old filter didn't stay on there long, I made a comparison in a log before and after. The saw was noticeably angrier after the duel port and hd2. Most noticeably it revved much quicker. The old filter and muffler cover stayed in the toolbox since lol.

Test them both after 20 hours of spitback going on.

I noticed newer 440's don't have the spit back baffle on them as they used hd2 as well. It's been fine on the saw for a while but I'll keep eye on it. I kept the original parts.

I would never have thought fuel soaked filter would act so plugged till the hd2 on my milling saw did that ,i need to get a baffle in it.

When I bought my 044, it still had this style air filter on it. Im not really impressed with the fitment of the filter. One day I just so happen to take the top cover off and examine the filter. Some how fines had got collected in the spit back foam and inside the filter. After that I applied some grease to help it seal better. I just had no idea that this setup doesn't seal good. That was my first lesson in Stihl 044 air filters. Mind you I had only maybe burned 2 tank fulls of fuel since the last time I checked the filter. I just switched to the k&n filter to see if that helps.

As someone i believe stated before, this filter needs to be oiled? It seems like a nice filter.

I've never had a problem with fines in my 044/440s. Make sure it is on right & tight.

A pleated filter (like HD-2 and the AM clones) will have much more surface area than the flat filters and should flow more air and go longer between cleans.

The K&N flows great, but the dust sticks to it and IMO is too hard to clean. I prefer the HD-2s and AM clones.

I don't think the clones flow any better or stay cleaner longer, but they are much less expensive. I've got some saws with each in an effort to get a better perspective.

I agree with Mason, my 044 felt like a whole different saw switching from the orig filter to an HD-2, but Brian may also be right, our old filters had likely seen better days.

Some of my saws seem to spit back more than others, and I always orient my filter the same way (same side up) as I notice the spit back is usually just on the bottom, and I believe keeping the top dry always allows plenty of clean air to get in. That said, milling is always tougher on saws. I usually use the 460 & 660s for that cause they have spit back guards.

Do not soak the hd2 in gas to clean them ,it disolves the glue holding them together .

This saw has the hd2 now with the predicted on it. Do I need the prefilter? I don't have one on my 441 and I didn't like it on the 440 I had either.

Hd2 normally do not come with a prefiler ,the reg hd did though ,i run the outerwear brand filter cover on my saws ,it keeps the big stuff out ,some fines do get through though ,but the filters go longer between cleanings with them ,

I don't run a pre filter. Depending on the wood you cut, and conditions, the chips will often come out if you remove the filter and tap it on a piece of wood on a regular basis (after a few tanks). Every now & then I blow them clean with compressed air, but I don't do it every time.

I mostly cut hardwood with square file chain. If you cut different wood, or mill with the saw, this may not work well for you.

That was my thinking too.

Not to hijack this, but a few questions... I had a nice 661 my dad wanted, so he gave me his 044 and 400 bucks, do I have a ks 10mm? It has the red kill switch, but not the riveted germany tag. Also I believe thats what the slanted fins look like, but I've never seen straight. Serial number is 125451459.

Also, in researching this, I think the other 044 I have may be a 10mm. It's serial number 119515763. I wrote about it a while back because I bought it thinking it was OEM but had an aftermarket cylinder. I guess if it was ks, someone could have pulled it and sold it, then sold the saw running?
