Ive taken a new perspective on this ..

Ive tried saws from all the famous internet porters minus scott kunz..some ran great..some were average on a good day..some are owned by guys that the thought of them actually cutting wood is scary...they make me nervous just to watch.

I have a 346xp that has NO port work done .. just a gasket delete , muff mod , timing bump and an unlimited coil..it will take some "ported" 50cc saws to school and be neck and neck with others...it cost me 2 hours of my time.

I feel like i pissed alot of money away.. but i learned a few things along the way..ive spent 300 dollars on way worse things..and after mike lee ports me a 660 ill probably never spend 300 dollars again to have a chainsaw ported..although if i encounter a saw ported by scott id love to try it.

I figure if i get a saw ported for 300 dollars how much of that is actually from the port work itself..i think a majority comes from the muffler mod and comp increase from the things ive tried..so for example if i get a 30% gain in cut speed 20% of that i could have achieved myself so i paid 300 bucks for a 10% increase..maybe 15%..nah..not this dude anymore.

I like when hedgerow said " its the indian not the arrow "

To each is own.. Just my humble

experienced opinion :)
What about the sticker ?

Always need a reliable saw that is stock. When they break its time to tinker with them. Guess what I am trying to say is if it ain't broke don't fix it. When it breaks add a port and muffler job.

good philosophy! because when it's time to cut wood and make firewood... don't want to have to put back together the modded one first!!! [ eeek, oops, it's still apart! ] lol... my 'go-to' preferred performance upgrades for my stockers is a) clean no ethanol gasoline... and b) very sharp chain!

workx for me! :)

Im content with a stock saw. I rebuilt a nice 346xp with a oem N.E. topend. I was very happy with it. Everyone always said how great a ported 346xp is, but I thought the stock 346xp was great lol. I now have a ported 2153. To me the porting made the saw "angrier".

Another saw that im very impressed with in stock form is the 550xp. We use them regularly at work. Light weight, smooth and strong.

Ive owned 3 ported saws and soon to be 4. Having some of my saws ported is just my own curiousity of how much better the saw could be. Mind you the saws that I have were already good in stock form. I like to have a light, strong saw. By having my 044 ported, it just means my heavier 2188 will get used lesser than before, but remember there's no replacement for displacement.

When I work on anybody else's saws I leave them stock unless they want a muffler mod. I'll grind on mine if I think there's more to the saw to be had especially echo's they really wake up even from a muffler mod.

I'm happy with a good running stock saw . I do have one ported saw which I had done just because....no real reason .
I think just a good muffler mod and a sharp chain are as far as I would go to consider any saw a good cutter .

The most I have done to my saws is to take out the base gasket and open up the muffler on the really chocked up ones. I have never run a ported saw os I am happy with how all my saws run for their size. I spend most of my performance time on chain shapening. I still am not a pro but i can make some nice chips when i cut.

What about the sticker ?

Im gonna buy a big penis sticker..to remind myself i got hammered.

I think porting shows up better on bigger displacement saws for real world working..i know the saw racers disagree with me but when i buck 10-15" logs with a 40-60cc saw i dont notice a second here and there ... its irrelevant for the most part in MY use.

I know porting for torque is the common theme here and in IMO thats great on the big saws..i got to run a 346 that was ported for "torque" and it got its ass handed to it over and over again buy a saw with much less compression and a different porting scheme in common size logs you would buck with a 50cc saw.

i dont care if a 50cc saw has the torque to pull a 24" bar..its not what i use it for , i want it built for speed in the size wood i personally cut..once again..to each is own.

After all my trials of trading and buying ported saws to satisfy my own curiosity ive come to one conclusion , i dont think any saw builder is best across the board..they all have certain models that their approach works really well for and some not so much...ive drawn that conclusion from actually trying what some people just type.

Im not knockin anyone spending their own money how they see fit..after all its their money..im just sharing what ive actually experienced..no more ..no less.

ok..

661 41" bar .404 RS full comp 118dl (Times are in the title of vid.)

TM661 41" bar .404 RS ...same chain.

cookies are nice. But I think it takes the least amount of effort for the saw to pull a chain when your cutting straight down. I think it requires more power to pull the chain through the wood at any angle that isn't straight down. ...why I like torque.

or try doing this with a stock 880

No..keep goin...the ones you didnt have time to share yet.
