Hmm,but it's in the detached garage and it's cold outside!
Yeah that's about a 2 hr job. Few cups of coffee then get dressed up warm looking like a star fish, waddle out to garage get saw, waddle back home, undress drink more coffee while saw warms up then work on it

I'm right there with you. Over the years my tastes in saws has changed too Kevin. At one time I wanted to get everything I could out of every saw I touched. It was when we were cutting day after day a couple of years ago......things changed. We had a bunch of modded 372XPs, and after 6 or 8 hours of running those things I hated them. The pitch of the exhaust was terrible......they ran out of fuel too soon......starter pawls broke, etc, etc......

I just wanted a quieter saw.......can I get a better muffler????? PLEASE????

It was then that I started trying to build saws that got better fuel economy, were not so damn loud, and started a little easier. Sure, running a bad ass saw is a blast.......for awhile. But what if the starter breaks? What if your freakin ears bleed? Am I gonna need a damn fuel truck to follow me thru the woods?

I want a good running saw......and I want a bump in performance......but I want to think it though when I start making changes to an already damn good machine.
I did make a glass filled silencer for a weed whip engine that I used on a skateboard. Night n day difference when you can listen to tunes and cruise

I absolutely appreciate and enjoy a good running stock saw. I have owned my 357xp for nearly 10 years now and never touched it till a few months ago. I was always very happy with how it ran...

But me being me, and that's a tinker's tinkerer, I made the mistake of joining a couple of saw forums and tried a few easy and common modifications. Being very familiar with 2-stroke engines like found in my ATC's, I found these saws to be a joy to work on. Yes, the parts are smaller, but they are so much simpler... No transmission section in the crankcase to make sure every thrust washer, shim, shift fork hub, and gear is perfectly in place. The yield in performance in these saws from very basic little mods is a real treat!

So I just went the long way around the barnyard to say that I like and enjoy both... Never ran a truly ported saw though. It's on the list. :)

I'm thinking about a 550 but I'm waiting to hear how the auto tune saws work out for other people and watch for threads on mods and improvements. If nothing else I think the 550 is pretty sharp looking unit. How long have you had yours metallic?

I agree with mastermind in the post above.

I do the same with my 1997 Dodge Ram Cummins truck. Stock is so :sleep3:.... The Truck has so much difficulty trying to pass even slow moving traffic that's going below speed limit on a busy highway. It was pathetic.

So the P7100 pump was adjusted... What follows was amazing... I can pass cars with authority! I had so much fun that i forgot to look at the fuel gauge until to late.... out of fuel... :sisi1 Then auto trans started dying... Dana 70 rear end is at risk of snapping a pinion.

Manual trans went in, dual disc clutch, big :pesas:dana 80 went in, new performance injectors, modified the stock turbo, tweaked the pump for more, a little more timing...

Now I have a truck that makes around 400 hp, pours on big torque like a big rig, gets 3 mpg better towing heavy loads than stock or just the pump modified. Now I can compete in sled pulling events without much worry about breaking stuff and just have fun :coleman:......

The truck is a joy to drive now, I will never have left it stock... Also when I work with it, I get paid more to haul the heavier loads that would've left stock weezing...

Some things, I do like to keep stock, but some things really do need the extra oomph.

when you can pull the same loads, on the same road... and start to climb... and it doesn't downshift, but rather... pulls steady in final drive... you know you have accomplished something!!! sounds like a sweet running Dodge!

Stock is fine for some but not so much for me, don't have a stock saw,my pickup was rated at 255hp and now has 450 and gets used that way without any issues after some other upgrades to the driveline, our tractors all have the pumps turned up with different turbos on.... Well you get the drift

Homelite410; That's an interesting option. :) My Mastermind 066 with a single large 1 inch by 1 inch square side exhaust port is quieter than my buddy's mastermind 660 with a modified dual port. And I win the competition......:coleman:

Ive taken a new perspective on this ..

Ive tried saws from all the famous internet porters minus scott kunz..some ran great..some were average on a good day..some are owned by guys that the thought of them actually cutting wood is scary...they make me nervous just to watch.

I have a 346xp that has NO port work done .. just a gasket delete , muff mod , timing bump and an unlimited coil..it will take some "ported" 50cc saws to school and be neck and neck with others...it cost me 2 hours of my time.

I feel like i pissed alot of money away.. but i learned a few things along the way..ive spent 300 dollars on way worse things..and after mike lee ports me a 660 ill probably never spend 300 dollars again to have a chainsaw ported..although if i encounter a saw ported by scott id love to try it.

I figure if i get a saw ported for 300 dollars how much of that is actually from the port work itself..i think a majority comes from the muffler mod and comp increase from the things ive tried..so for example if i get a 30% gain in cut speed 20% of that i could have achieved myself so i paid 300 bucks for a 10% increase..maybe 15%..nah..not this dude anymore.

I like when hedgerow said " its the indian not the arrow "

To each is own.. Just my humble experienced opinion :)

Backyard Lumberjack; Thanks for the compliments, yes it's a very good truck. Has 338,000 miles on it and runs very nicely.

I helped a farmer with a roller mill machine that grinds corn to powder. It's powered by a Dodge Cummins engine that was pulled from a wreck.

He at first only played with the pump. The engine produced 265 hp and ran under full power for hours. The exhaust manifold glowed orange. After grinding up 6,000 tons of corn, the turbo melted and the engine melted down too.

He had the engine rebuilt, bought a new turbo, I modified the turbo for him which is similar to the turbo in my Ram, the engine now made even more power without adding more fuel. The manifold no longer glowed orange and the engine now produced a full load 300 hp. It's also now better on fuel as well.

Very tough engine....

I'm the type that can't leave nothing stock. I don't take a chevy 6 cylinder and replace it with a chevy 350. I take that 6 cylinder and make it kill a 350. lol Same with my saws. Though so far I've been having to much fun with muffler mods.

way to go! I am on ur team, too! I like sprint kart V8 acceleration, but I like 6's too. have 2... I could tell u about them, but prob not suitable for this site or thread, other than I can haul my saws in the rig they power... but I will tell u this about my other 'street 6' ! full crankshaft scraper, full length windage screen, studs for head, hot solid cam... ported heads, stud pinned rocker studs, roller rockers, 4 barrel carb, etc... NOS (I have the very first NOS diffuser nozzle every sent out of NOS when they first came out with their design) it was sent to me for my 6! took some V8s Camaros, 'stangs on the spray!!! stop lite stuff. had slicks in rear behind stock hubcaps!! and r u sittin' down?: 5.13's:1 rear posi gear in read! lol ;) and... one hot Saturday night ( few moons ago) I was getting gasoline... before heading over to the show... and my 6 was idling... and one dude came up to car with another... "there Dave, there! that's what u need, a hot chevy V8...!" oh he does, huh? I said, so would u guys like to see my V8 sbc? oh yes, dude, sure, yeah... cool!!!! (76 nova, 5-spd Doug Nash, 12-bolt) and I popped the hood! "Boing! " :sconf: "omg, it's a 6!" sounds like a V8!

i designed it so the piston came up out of the deck... and the top of piston stopped its upward movement in the head gasket! talk about some serious squish!!! still have the engine, sold the car with a LS-5 I had stuck in it... lol

OMG! it's a 6! ;)

my other one powers my van of 25 years... the a/c evap core is the trans oil cooler! lol... ;) .020 over, decked, balanced, MSD, Magnecore Race Wires, RV cam, ported head, valve bowl work, dual exhaust with Gibson components... full ADDCO sway bar upgrades frt back... daily driver! smooth n sweet! :aaaaa: :icon12: it!

sorry for jumpin' off the thread... not everyday I get to tell someone interested ... about my 6's lol ;)
