I bet his 044 wears a 28 or 32 ,common size out here .

One thing I do on cold starts is roll the saw over a few times slowly, to prime up the carb. Then with the dogs engaged at the compression stroke(by feel) giver a good pull. If your quick enough with the choke, you can have a one pull(heavy) start. Works for me, I can't stand pullin' & pullin' on a saw either, maybe it could help your dad a bit.

He said his dad's an old logger, so I'm guessing he knows all the tricks to starting a saw.

Maybe I misinterpreted, but I thought Junkman's post said this wouldn't work. What's a meteor?

I think we have to determine if your 044 is a 10mm or 12mm. What is the SN???

Meteor is a high quality AM piston often used by builders on this site.

10mm jug works on a 12mm case and piston. But not the other way around.
