Lowes used to have pull handles like this:

Fat, rubber cushioned they are.

My tiny hand was getting torn up pull starting 98cc of reed valve snort even with a decomp valve.

And if you still have trouble, you can drill out the valve bleed port a bit larger.
Which is what I had to do on this MS880.

A decomp cylinder may be nice, but the FIRST THING I WOULD TRY is to reduce the timing a bit, that should help it to start much easier, with minimal mods to the saw.

You can pull the flywheel and file the key on the opposite side they do for advance, or use the VERY SIMPLE METHOD ... Just increase the gap between the coil and the flywheel a bit.

I would try this first, and see how it works. Best of luck with it, an 044 is a great saw!

The other option may be to get Dad a 50 or 60 cc saw that is lighter and has compression relief, and you take over that 044.

My offer stands, and I will cover all shipping costs. This 044 is a project that I got in a lot, and I will not be keeping it. Building it as a cheap 28" bar saw for a buddy.

The local Stihl shop says the bolt patterns between the 044 and 440 don't match.
