That stupid metal clamp is really important. I'm now beveling the male end of the clamp to make it easier to get under the female end. Then lineman pliers to clamp it. THEN move that part of the clamp out of the way....rotationally....so it doesn't run into the air jet part of the case.

Nice photos :)

The site has been hurting for build threads lately, so I thought I would document what is a standard job for a dealer. We all know how failure prone the intake clamp is on the 340/345/350/351/353/346/357/359 and this is what it takes to replace one on the "junk" saws.

Partially disassembled and initial cleaning.

First step is to remove the clutch.
Nice thread Joe :)

year 06 week 24 and they still used that stupid plastic clamp.

The whole 340-359 serie saws had a ridicilous intake system, worse was with the plastic clamp, but I wouldnt say they improved alot with the metal clamp either.

Long live the classic 2xx and the 5xx serie!!

PS, thanks cus_deluxe

Thanks guys, I have a couple of 562s to replace the bottom ends on, a couple of 350s to put 346 top ends on, a 268 to do a case split and 272 top end, a 359 that needs a new piston and seals, a 55 that needs the bottom end replaced, a 55 that needs a new piston, another 55 that needs carb kit etc, and my 394 that needs a case split and a 395 top end. I am thinking of doing a similar thread for each, thoughts? To mundane?

I would love to see threads on those builds Joe.
I also like that you filled this thread with lots of pictures, its far easier to study details instead of a video ;)

Awesome. I have a 345e with plastic clamp that needs doin. Saw runs great. And I am a Stihl guy.
Just hate the look of that job and having to pull the jug just to replace that sh't clamp.

It's really not that bad Jeff and well worth doing, they are good little saws. It is also an excuse to get a 350 bearing cap and upgrade to a 346 XP top end. :D

Not sure if it is even worth spending that much money on a used ( albeit in great condition) Husky 345.
Hence my dilemma of even spending money and time replacing the clamp.
