My 427 Ford Low Riser Short Block (1966 version) had 2 bumpers on top of each piston that were intended to be valve bumpers if you had excessive valve float.

Glad I never tested them out! I guess in a race they may have kept you operational!

Wayne, if you can figure out why automotive engineers do some of the things they do, you let me know.
I have been in this line of work since 1993 and have yet to figure most of it out.

The dish is needed to clear the injector. Most everything is interference, so with variable cam timing the cutouts are required so the valves dont meet the pistons during normal operation. Take all that away, it would be a flat top.
The new 5.3's are somewhat similar, but actually have a dome. Funky looking piston for sure.
I dont have that kind of patience lol

So to stop valve let's have the piston smack the valves?

That makes zero sense

What do you think is the cause?

GM claims piston fractures in the ring lands are caused by not using Dexos oil.

I know we had a recall on these very early to reprogram and change oil for detonation.
I think GM doesnt know how to program.
And chit materials.

Read my post, I never said it made much sense, but they had them … and the 427 Ford was a racing engine. Mine was a 66 Holman + Moody seasoned block with the crank cut (trued) 10+20. Found that our after I bought new bearings!

I have seen ringlands blown apart in powersports engines and it was usually a combination of poor fuel and way overdue oil change.

You did say you had a Holman+Moody motor. If it was me I'd protect that investment.

Been gone for years, except the memories! Bought the 427 short block for $300 when I was in college, got the 70 Boss 302 Body (engine had a spun bearing for the second time) for $800, sold parts from the Boss motor (including heads) for $300, so I got my money's worth!

Could not keep them, did not have a garage to put them in, and could not let them rust outside. Had 2 68 Fastback GTs and the 70 Boss when I got married. Had to sell them. I'm just thankful that I had them, and that I have the current one to drive now. It runs about like the 427 did (with the SC) but I can get over 20 MPG highway (got 14 on the highway with the 427) and I have power windows and AC!

I have a 67 Chevelle my Dad and I purchased together back in 2000-2001.
Working on cars every day has me beat down to where I have not touched it in 3 years or so, other than to move it out of my shop to my parents back garage so I had more room.
Ton of money and time into it. I just need to suck it up and finish it.
For a while, kids and money held it up.
Now, it's just money and motivation holding me back.

I concur. Old iron is great to look at, but new cars have tons of power. My slightly built 82 GT, can't hold a candle to 16 GT.

The current Mustang GT has 460 Hp, and with the 10 spd auto, on a good day, some of them will run high 11s right off the showroom floor! That is hard to beat with real street tires. The Dam* launch control electronics mean you don't even have to know how to drive any more!
