Mike as easy as it is to test why would you not on a saw of unknown history? Better to test and find a bad seal or something now rather than after you have it all back together and trying to get it running! Oh by the way check the flywheel key also![emoji41]
I got one of those vac/pressure testers also, but have not used it or even taken it out of the box yet.
I cleaned up a scored MS440 jug today using Rany's method (did not have afternoon appointments, and the weather was fairly good). The piston fried (on the exhaust side only) because the Hi screw was only 1/4 turn out. Other than that, the saw looks in pretty good shape, so I don't think there is any need to test it.
Hopefully, all it needs is a new piston. The NKG plug in it looks like it has never fired. It is also missing the metal handle.
Someone needs a west coast clutch cover! [emoji6] looks great!Finished playing with my 064. I believe it's my strongest saw to date.
Looking good Mike. You'll have a couple pretty sweet saws when your all done. I hope you bring them both to Greenwich.
Fixed the trigger and ready AGAIN to hear it for the 1st time. Awwww Man! It's flooding real bad! I took extra care with the HDA-199 while watching TreeMonkey's video. Well, it got opened up again and I prefer to say it isn't that I did something wrong but its what I didn't do. Runs great now.Put together a Husq 359 and was about to start it for the 1st time and the trigger jammed.
oil pump is 45-50$ at the dealerBuddy of mine's 009. Went through the fuel system and it runs like a champ, just not oiling.

The bright sunlight is the only way to look good at them aint it.My bench is probably a little smaller than your bench, but it has an advantage, I can move it outside on nice days! It is actually a stool that I made when I was building the house that will fit between the studs and let me reach my high basement ceiling, but now it often functions as a work bench.
I've got parts for 2 saws in transit right now, a new piston for the MS440, and a new flywheel nut and crank key for the MS460. (Thanks Mark)
I'm excited about both saws, as I got to watch Al port the 046-D jug that is on the MS460, and I feel I rescued the MS440 from the dead using Randy's method of cleaning the cylinder. Plus, I'm doing everything on the MS440 on my own.
Was able to steal a little time in the afternoon (after the rain stopped and the sun came out) and work on the 440 a bit. Cleaned the jug a little more after checking it out in the bright sunlight, pulled the limiters on the carb and cleaned it up, and separated the tank handle from the case and started cleaning them up. I'm very pleased I was able to clean up the jug, it looked a mess when I first started on it.
I'm not a PSP, but I don't think that 440 had ever been cleaned, and I don't think it has that many hours on it. Enjoy the pics, sorry they are not high quality, just cell phone stuff.
Hey Brewz...First one iv ever seen or worked on...the bloke has hardly worn out 2 chains on it so i believe !! they are a early saw and solid build .
I was able to fix the pump. Ended up being some crap on the rod causing it to bind since it is a diaphragm pump. The shop I work for is a dealer so I was well aware I could get parts.oil pump is 45-50$ at the dealer
