Mike as easy as it is to test why would you not on a saw of unknown history? Better to test and find a bad seal or something now rather than after you have it all back together and trying to get it running! Oh by the way check the flywheel key also![emoji41]

I'll know right away if it does not run & idle right. Very unlikely a saw this new will have those problems. The rubber all looks great.

I got one of those vac/pressure testers also, but have not used it or even taken it out of the box yet.

I cleaned up a scored MS440 jug today using Rany's method (did not have afternoon appointments, and the weather was fairly good). The piston fried (on the exhaust side only) because the Hi screw was only 1/4 turn out. Other than that, the saw looks in pretty good shape, so I don't think there is any need to test it.

Hopefully, all it needs is a new piston. The NKG plug in it looks like it has never fired. It is also missing the metal handle.

The more you use the kits the more you wonder how you got along without it. Saws, bleeding brakes, hydraulic clutches and the best so far, testing Holley power valves.

My bench is probably a little smaller than your bench, but it has an advantage, I can move it outside on nice days! It is actually a stool that I made when I was building the house that will fit between the studs and let me reach my high basement ceiling, but now it often functions as a work bench.

I've got parts for 2 saws in transit right now, a new piston for the MS440, and a new flywheel nut and crank key for the MS460. (Thanks Mark)

I'm excited about both saws, as I got to watch Al port the 046-D jug that is on the MS460, and I feel I rescued the MS440 from the dead using Randy's method of cleaning the cylinder. Plus, I'm doing everything on the MS440 on my own.

Was able to steal a little time in the afternoon (after the rain stopped and the sun came out) and work on the 440 a bit. Cleaned the jug a little more after checking it out in the bright sunlight, pulled the limiters on the carb and cleaned it up, and separated the tank handle from the case and started cleaning them up. I'm very pleased I was able to clean up the jug, it looked a mess when I first started on it.

I'm not a PSP, but I don't think that 440 had ever been cleaned, and I don't think it has that many hours on it. Enjoy the pics, sorry they are not high quality, just cell phone stuff.

QUESTION: Can you use the wrist pin from the old piston as a tool to install the clips on the new piston?

I also have a couple of tips to share with other less experience guys like myself (I do learn):

1) Before you fully tighten the two muffler bolts next to the exhaust, start the two lower muffler cover bolts. Yea, you have to pull them back out to get the muffler cover on, but at least when you tighten the other two bolts your holes will be lined up.

2) I often have difficulty pulling the tabs on the 440 & 460 carbs. The Hi is easy, just start the sheet rock screw, then turn the limiter all the way counter clock wise and the tab will be lined up - just pull. It is the Lo that always messes me up, as I have difficulty lining up the tab with the slot. Well, the sun light was real good today, and my old eyes got it figured out. Only turn the Lo counter clockwise about 1/4 turn, and the tab is lined up with the screwdriver slot. Works easy when you can finally see what the H*** your doing!

Put together a Husq 359 and was about to start it for the 1st time and the trigger jammed.
Fixed the trigger and ready AGAIN to hear it for the 1st time. Awwww Man! It's flooding real bad! I took extra care with the HDA-199 while watching TreeMonkey's video. Well, it got opened up again and I prefer to say it isn't that I did something wrong but its what I didn't do. Runs great now.

A customer has been having awful luck lately on saws... He bought all his saws on a local online auction. Well, I have already had to put top ends on 3 of them for him, and since he got them he hadn't put much time on them.

He dropped off a 371 that was hard to start. The plug looked like it was running extremely lean. The intake had no clamp on it and worked off slightly:facepalm:

I took the wrap off to pull the cylinder and and found this.....
