The 461 had never been apart. My brother also suggested the intake ate something, but no missing nuts, etc. I will try to check the baring cages, I know one of my 460s had lost one (I didn't catch it till the last minute when fixing it).

Any way this could have been just a structural flaw with the piston?

I guess I better pull the flywheel, the magnets on this one are about as strong as I have ever seen, makes it tough to roll it over.

Parts day! Love it when the mail man brings me goodies.

New 24" bar for my favorite saw 272xp.

New Carlton 105 DL full skip chain for my crusty but trusty 281xp.

New handle bar cover for this old 041av and fuel fittings and hose pipe/fuel filter. Did a bone head maneuver on air filter, did not realize regular 041 filter is different.

A simple fuel filter change turned a bit more involved with this saw - pp5020av. When I pulled the old filter off the fuel line there was like an inner plastic skin stuck to it and it started pulling out of the fuel line, rendering it quite useless. New Tygon line did the trick. Also an air filter, spark plug and drum sprocket helped make 'er good again. A note about air filters on these saws - the fit between filter and base is poor allowing fines to come in, I've been putting just a bit of grease at the connection to catch 'em.

Hmmm. You might be on to something. I'm gonna get out my walbro cross reference book and have a look. And need to find the diaphragm I took out of it. I'll report back. Thank you simon
The double forked end on the metering lever should tell you lots ..AS..long as the right bits were in the carb to start with. Man... carbs can be a pain ! :D

OK guys, I've never seen anything like this before, but I think I see what happened to the MS461. Seems like the bottom of the piston broke (why???), then came up through the transfers, whacked the spark plug closed (if I did not see the owner start the saw, I would not have believed it would run), then on the way out the exhaust, dented the top of the piston and froze the top ring. How does a saw run w/o any spark plug gap???

Only damage to the cylinder seems to be a tiny pin prick I can not even feel, so I think I am safe in re-using the jug.

Comments on the pics welcome. I can't figure why it happened, the bearings all seem just fine.

The Mfg date is June of 13, and it is one of the cleanest saws I've ever taken apart (and it is a commercial use saw).

I would think it ran with a holed or no said filter for a long time. Hard to tell on a ph but it looks like the piston skirt has worn real thin and crumbled away.

Started like this

After disassembly and scrubbing in the parts washer, installing new av springs, porting, and reassembly, it looks like this. Cleaned up pretty nice I think.
