Not unusual. Heat from the muffler cooks it. It shrinks.....gets brittle....then gets gone.

Use some foil tape under the muffler.
Muffler volume must make a difference. Or you’d think they would’ve made it 1/8” smaller. Some of the used ones you can see where the muffler is actually wearing on top of the oil tank where it rubs

Saved an 036 oil pump from the dumpster a few minutes ago, I broke the nipple off so I drilled it out and put a brass one in. If I just had a worm gear I could finish it up and see how it runs.

Couple projects, ms440 muffler mod and a original set of 1997 371xp cases, probably use them to build the last xpw topend I have, I like that it's a first year set of cases.View attachment 323579 View attachment 323580
Timing! I just today split a pair of 365 cases. One 97, one 06. Think 97 was V1, 06 V4? Anyhoo, didn't think much of it at the time but internally the bar-stud area was definitely different. Was this one of the improvements touted as 371 became 372?

Yes sir, when they switched to the 372 they added reinforced area to the bar pad area, although honestly I have had several 371s and never had an issue.

Today's cast iron welding..flywheels needed a 4140 ring to add inertia. Mixing another metal into the puddle making three materials including the rod keeps it interesting..Cast iron can be a bugger, but these went good. lots of preheat and then careful post weld heating..cover em up with a heat barrier and keep the fingers crossed.IMG_20220112_140122.jpg
