My bench is empty. I am still trying to get everthing situated in our first house. Previous owner loved ski boats and the place has a three sided shop for two big ski boats. It's a long way from where I'd like it, but it's 100x better than my previous situation of a shop.

I’m sure you already know this, but files are brittle as hell and there’s a good chance you’ll snap it in half unless you anneal and retemper it.
Yes sir, already been annealed, being worked and will be heat treated again. Most files are no harder than 65-70 RC. You can actually temper then down to 58-60 give or take just by tempering for a few hours.

Will anealing that file make it usable as a knife? I always thought about trying to make a knife out of a file, I did make a draw knife out of one, but never annealed it.
You can anneal them but you’ll have to treat and temper them again. If not they usually not hold a good edge or bend.
