2 questions regarding my 2171W build.
#1 someone along the way cut the cylinder extensions to roughly .050 from flush with the base. I know there is some debate but how will that affect performance?
#2 is a 268 pop up worth it?

Anyone know what model this SHIN DAIWA is. Coworker brought it to me. Very rough but piston and cylinder look ok through exhaust port. View attachment 320738View attachment 320739View attachment 320740View attachment 320742View attachment 320743

Thanks bud, I may see what all it needs and figure something out. Or I may just part it out.

Either way it's a winner. There is still a following with that saw.
Good find!!

It won’t matter if it’s an XP cylinder. You’re just gaining some case capacity. If it’s as xtorq, it’s actually free porting the stratos at bottom dead center. I’ve done it before intentionally and they ran pretty good. But in the name of trying to keep some of the xtorq fuel efficiency, I don’t do it that way any longer.

Never tried a 268 piston. I like the skirts on the regular 372 piston better

Thanks

I've only used the 268 closed sided pistons and they give a nice compression bump, I have two in saws now.

If you decide to put that girl together here may be a parts source on the other site.
He goes by alderman. His name is Rich and he is a heavy duty Shindaiwa guy for sure. If I remember correctly he is in Oregon.

Figured we could have a beer and say good bye. This ones going to my buddys dad for Christmas. Lol! Wer trading and on my end is coming a Blue Point 3/8” socket set with case. He said its brand new and like 49 pc. Includes deep, shallow, extensions, ratchet and more! This saw got a flat top Meteor making it a 353. El-32 carb and 359 elbow and filter. TA, MM under stock deflector and some fresh VHT. Muffler bracket. True Blue. Filter Skin over the primer bulb hole cuz that got eliminated. Prob a bunch of other things/parts i cant think of right now. No grinding and a gasket went back in for easy starting(as requested). It sits now around .26 squish. I thought about just putting a decomp back in but i think a more mild mannered saw is what he is looking for. As of now he has only a top handle and this is his big saw now:D 18” .325. Hope hes tickled! Enjoy the pics! 65BE1694-20EE-451B-AF90-DC412A6369A7.jpeg3AC54A6B-289B-4CD9-B44E-889CE078D081.jpeg0EFAC971-346C-439C-807D-0C19549D5784.jpeg8C01998C-BE40-43A5-9F85-9F53B1663903.jpeg9F31C765-5ACC-478A-B2BF-443765A5DA30.jpeg

Did that originally have just the single little pencil hole for an outlet like my 2007 440. I noticed some had the single little hole with deflector and then another slit nearby and was wondering if that was an update to let the saw at least breathe. Maybe Stihl decided they went too far and added the slit? I am going to ask my dealer cause they have the updates on their computer system. Mine burns lean even with the hi.limiter out to the rich max...do not see how it could be run any other way without lean burning the piston up. That little pencil hole reduced even further by the screen is tiny.

My 440 kit saw came with dual port 100% open muffler and no spark arrest. I keep finding myself cutting in neighborhoods, so I picked up an oem 460 muffler. Has internal deflector, the small hole with slit and spark screen. Saw is a lot quieter, runs about the same because I deleted base gasket as well. Squish from .0450 to .0200.

Sharpie marks are where I was thinking about adding a slit and opening up exit port.

I contacted my Stihl dealer parts Dept. They had the single small hole version as OEM for the serial # chainsaw I have. The small hole with the slit version was Stihl's USA dual port option and listed on his computer as discontinued.

That is really good how you are being considerate of the neighbors and a smart move. It is easy to get caught up in the hype for power and forget the real world usage.

Looks like you have a 4x4 truck and a trailer and that is a good combo that I have used to make money. I bought my Farmertec kit from money from selling firewood. The price of firewood is getting higher and higher due to big increases in electricity and heating oil/gas.

I am self employed and switch what I do to what job comes my way. I have welders and cutting torch and have built trailers. The dual axle trailer with electric brakes and winch was a trailer I built. The combo of that with my 4x4 truck has been invaluable to making money. I added a big tranny cooler, 10k winch, electric brake control and over ride springs and other things on the truck.

I have had big trucks but like the pick up and trailer combo the best. That way I am not stuck maintaining and insuring and registering multiple vehicles. If I got a big job, there is a dump truck and another DT 466 double framed and long wheel based available to me.

After wind storms there is plenty of wood to be had...maybe even get paid to remove. One windstorm we had blew over the last standing wall on a foundation I was bringing down...the wall was 28' x 8" and I had tried knocking it over with the backhoe. That is the reason I was in a rush to get a bunch of trees down and got my saw busted up on one of the last ones.tmp-cam-8633711415658276529.jpg

Nice!! I did contact the Stihl dealer out of curiosity of the two OEM mufflers...the single small hole vs the small hole with slot. The single small hole was stock on the serial # Stihl Magnum 440 I own. The small hole with a slit OEM muffler was Stihl's USA dual port option for my saw and the parts guy said it listed as discontinued.

I asked him about the Stihl 462. He said unavailable and they have had one on order since September.

I called the biggest Stihl dealer around about the Stihl 462. The sales department guy told me it is unavailable due to Covid shipping problems (or that is assumed). He said they are the largest dealer in New England or something like that and they are behind over 400 Stihl saws due to Covid shipping problems. They can get the models from Virginia but the ones (us guys like) that are coming from Germany are caught up in Covid shipping problems and Stihl does not give them any info.. He said it does not matter dealer size as to who gets saws first and that Stihl ships based on who orders first. If they had known what was going to happen, they would have stock piled more ahead of time.

John Deere that the same Dealer handles has the same situation going on but is able to provide more info about shipping etc. The guy told me to mix my oil and gas good with my 440 because who knows when big saws will be available.

This could all be nothing but gossip but the bottom line is both dealers had no big saws except the larger dealer had three 362s available.

There is a Husky dealer nearby so I am going to see what is going on with them as far as a 572. I am not in any rush or desperate but just want to be ready if that happens.

Merry Christmas and everyone stay healthy.
