Not on bench, but I'm dealing with something electrical on my 06 Polaris sportsman 500HO. I'm leaning towards a bad battery, but trying to cover my bases checking stator output and all that. Died on the trail with my daughter riding it yesterday, I could pull start it and it would run, but if you hit the brakes it would TRY to die ,then if you turned on the headlights, that would completely kill it. Turn everything off and pull start it again and would run fine. [emoji2369]

I’d look for where mice may have chewed the wiring. Could be the battery, could be the stator, and it could also be the speedometer. I believe everything electrical runs through the speedometer on them

Yup. My ‘01 had similar issues, it was the speedo.

Yes the speedo wiring is alot of the problems on these machines. I actually just got the speedo working again a couple weeks ago by replacing the hall effect sensor on front right wheel. I believe I've rounded it down to the stator again. The output voltage is too low at 2500 rpm and up. Should be close to 50ac according to Polaris and mines only 29bat the highest. But I I'm gonna take the ole big girls clothes off and check all the wiring.

Hey Marshall I believe those have a "sure power box" which we called sure no-power box...
Those are usually the cause of almost all electrical gremlins.
If it does turn out to be the stator I may have the correct one NIB. You probably don't want to know the OEM price on one if you can get it!!

I had a customer that told me I was full of *s-word when I told him his 4wd didn't work because he needed a speedo.
I'd have been pissed too if I was him, the dang thing was like 400 something buckaroos.

Yep. Couldn’t believe it

Yep its sure power ecm, it was actually replaced under warranty in 07-08. But I'm pretty sure it's the stator. To far off from specified measurements.

There's a few videos on YouTube about adding a switch to activate the 4x4 and bypassing everything else to do with it

Let me know if you have one and what you'd have to get out of it ,and well see if we can make a deal. I replaced it about 3 years ago with a caltric brand.

Off the outside (50 gallon drum) bench. Picked her up at a scrap yard , pretty sure it was a low hour saw but it had some significant rot on the bottom of the handle ,like it sat in a high moisture area.
Cleaned everything up and did a cheeky muffler mod .
Literally the only thing this saw needed was a fuel filter to run ,oil ,and cut.20210926_194127.jpg 20210926_194112.jpg 20210926_194056.jpg 20210926_194040.jpg

Got started on this 51. Made sure it ran which it does and very nicely! Rewound the recoil spring and installed a new proper length rope. His complaints were the recoil was messed up, a service and clean, and a new bar and 2 chains.

I have had 0 luck with any of the AM electrics, MC, 4wheeler, or auto.
My wife's old Rav 4 has had 6 ecms fail.
3 OEM and 3 AM.
It's dead again now. [emoji3525]

So you want to be a rebuilder........

Tech tip #1 get yourself one each of these to start with........
0926211538.jpg 0926211604.jpg

The E.O.S is the chit for your mains and rods. The polaris lube is used to fill the oil passage before you put the rod cap on. Don't freak out. The polaris stuff is thin like water. It is super thin and works slick for a quick first crank and fire up. Helps cut the oil prime time way down. (Yes even after priming it with a drill. It still helps on that first start)

You think you loose some, but if you already have the cam installed. As you usually should by this point. The lube you think you lost is actually in the oil passages leading to the cam bearings, oil pump and front cover. It wont all run out. Trust me. Done this a time or 1000 :headbang:

0926211441.jpg 0926211441a.jpg

#2 the fogging oil........ Forget about anything else on the cyl walls and piston skirts. The fogging oil has a good sheer strength, Doesn't run off the cyl walls and stays in and on where you put it. Annnnnnnddddddd it burns off real fast so you don't have a mosquito sprayer for long when you crank the sumbitch up

I know should have started a oil thread...... GFY and carry on :pancarta:

P.s......... Yeah. The cam is used........ So is the rest of the motor. It's a kid toting camper hauling pig. Not a 1/4 mi supercharged dragster. (Hey at least I noted and tagged the lifters when I pulled them)

Steven

Edit: About the polaris assembly lube. I was given a case a long time ago. It really doesn't have specs on the bottle. I just happen to like it for this one purpose. Before it was given to me. I was using a 0-40 synthetic atv oil.
The only purpose of this step is to help speed up the initial cranking of the engine and keep the bearings from spinning. I have witnessed several engines built by others. Who used super thick and sticky assembly lube and had almost immediate bearing failure. The assembly lube needs to get moving and out of the way, if it doesn't you can in effect cause a air lock and impede oil flow, people forget that. I figure the faster the oil from the pump can do it's job the better.

Stihl 020 Super x 2 - one top handle, one rear handle. Top handle saw is roached; figure I'll swap the handle to the really clean rear handle saw and keep the rest for parts. Also on the bench - 038 Magnum - just had case powder coated. Nothing fancy, but does have a 3 port muffler and a base gasket delete.
