Found a $20 Stihl 026 powerhead today at a thresheree swap meet. Compression was pretty low, so I pulled the muffler. Everything visible through the exhaust port looked alright, so I proceed to remove the cylinder.

Anyone ever see this before?? As far as I can tell, the top ring wore thin on the one side and began to fret back and forth in the groove... until there wasn't enough compression left to make the magic happen. Cylinder is in good shape, so I think this will be an easy fix.
I'm just amazed that thing lasted that long. I'da thought the comp level would have been way too low to run long before that kinda stuff would happen.

That's why I shared the pictures, this is something I have never seen before haha. Maybe it failed over the course of one tank, and the second ring sealed enough to keep it lit at speed? Just strange...

Neighbor brought me his 365. Says it died in the cut and wouldn’t start there after. Certainly wouldn’t idle.
I told him compression feels low and I’ll look at it.
I started looking and found the fuel filter was crappy. So replaced that and it seemed to make much better. Started and idled fine. Although it was unimpressive in a cut. (This is a Special it turns out)
Looked more today and found this.
What’s interesting is that the machine marks are in decent shape for a 1998 saw and this guys cut 4 cord a year. Except for the FW side of the exhaust, where it’s mollyhocked.
Any possibility this is carbon roll back from the exhaust opposed to going lean? And could lean be from a clogged filter?
Compression is 100 at this condition.
Yes on carbon, but it could even have been mud wasps. If the saw sits for a while all kinds of critters can find their way into the muffler.
Or if your a real conspiracy theorist !?20210906_054411.jpg

0 for 3 tonight. New carb was installed on the trimmer but it still just dies within 10 seconds, o-ring I ordered for the 3120 is the wrong size (it looks like a 272 o-ring), and I noticed the big end bearing on my 461 has a crack. Just one of those days.

First top handle saw for me. Just a rebuild with new bearings seals gaskets and cleaning. I'll get it running and broke in to see what all the hype is about then modify from there if i deem necessary. IMG_9948.JPG
after a long night in the shop, I was rewarded with a beer. Just waiting for new seals from my dealer so It can keep going together.

Topic #2, my 461 crank bearing. I noticed some pretty severe scratching on the new piston after roughly 2 tanks of run time. I also noticed what appears to be a crack in the big end bearing. Am I right to assume the scratching is being caused by the big end bearing giving out? The crack is the shiny scratch third needle up from the bottom of the pic.

My 19 hp Kawasaki stopped cold the other day. Drained the carb and fuel line. Think I found my issue. Lot of water and dirt. It's a old mower. I was wondering why it had no power.

Just curious. Did the mower have an in-line fuel filter on it? If it did, was it changed yearly or part of a regular maintenance schedule?

I put one in at the beginning of the year. I'v been torturing it all summer mowing several acres a week to get the bugs worked out. Figured out the fuel cap leaks.
