Still working on getting some saws cleaned up so I can move them into the museum.

This one came out pretty nice, certainly better than a page ago, just wish the Fairbanks Morse starter would behave.

The coil wire had been "repaired" by crimping a chunk of resistor/carbon core wire on the broken wire core lead.

Good spark now, I will have to address the starter another day.

Another clean up project underway, McCulloch 5-49.

This one will require numerous fastener repair/replacements as it goes back together. This saw was really used hard and put away wet.

I can't count how many 1/2 guns i've been through. I have had the IR 231's, some snap-on guns which i hated,
using 2 of the IR thunder guns which are nice and a Mac tools gun which i really like. I beat the snot out of
mine and run 180 psi through them consistently.

Check your sockets, If the sockets are worn out in the square hole they will take out the anvil pretty quick.

Lee H

You’re right, some of the sockets have become more a rounded X shape than a square hole.

I have mentioned to my boss that it’s time to replace them sockets before this new anvil gets destroyed.

I really like this gun. We also have two 3/4 drive IR’s as well but I find them hard on the wrist especially when I also have to hold a wrench with the other hand.

I prefer the 1 inch drive 2,500 ft/lb impact for the really hard stuff as it’s so easy to blow nuts and bolts off. Problem is, it’s so big to get into small places.

Parts Tree had the Fairbanks Morse starter friction washers (double D hole) at one time.

Remingtons use ‘em.

They were like 49 cents each but their standard shipping was $8.49. [emoji90]

So I ordered forty of them. [emoji12]

Passed out a bunch at the first Iowa GTG I attended as party favors. Has to be eight years now.[emoji15]. Got three left.

Ford Tech MakeuLoco on YT didn't have much nice to say about these Jasper fullas either bro.
He has always been to long winded for me but a very knowledgeable guy. I have nothing nice to say about them now. I will give them this almost every part in that transmission had a Ford part number in it and it has a Ford OEM solenoid pack. It almost seems as though they didn’t use frictions with hardened teeth in them. Some old stock that they already had on hand trying to use up. However they had quite a build up in the drums for holding power. I’m surprised my little 5.8 at the splines out of those frictions. My brother used the truck for about a year and I’m wondering if he went from drive to reverse at some out or the other way around and didn’t let it stop. The kolene steels in the forward and direct packs were good (flat good surface finish no wear ring) except two of them pressing the last forward friction that was holding still. No telling what caused it at this point.
It’s Getting GPZ clutches and all but the forward and correct drums has new raybestos steels in them. With the machine work and or types of drums Jasper built it with I was able to get full diesel sized clutch packs in except in the low reverse pack. Overdrive pack will be fun with the PTO gear in the way.
Got it back together up to the center support yeserday the rest will have to wait till we get back from a trip to the beach.

My new little lathe was delivered yesterday and got it up on my bench a few minutes ago, now I don't have to stand out in the hot garage where my other ones at when I want to turn something.

Today I decide to clean up the parts of this 048 I got years ago. It was tore down to clean out all the acidic hay that the farmer used.

I repaired areas that got ate through by acid.

Then it got put on the shelf for many years until today.

I’ve decided due to the length of time that went by and I’ve never started this saw even when I got it, (I knew it ran as I’ve seen it) I’m putting it back together.

Looks like you need a muffler. There was a local guy here for years that ran a ported 048 with a pipe in the timber carnivals, he even won some prizes. It had a very unusual sound to it.

Someone on this site or on AS did mention that the 048 have a sound only they make.

Been looking forward to hearing how it sounds.

Especially with a large hole.

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present a completely put back together 1979 048 Stihl.

So this is what the saw used to look like at one point. It was much more dirtier than this.

At the moment it doesn’t run until I put the flywheel back in but I’m missing the key for it.

Putting it together allowed me to see if all the parts and bolts are all there which unfortunately some are missing which I shall remedy soon.

Once all the stuff is finally together, I’ll put in fresh Red Max true fuel and some bar oil to see if everything works.

If all goes well, maybe a little run on the dyno to see what the power output is ;)
