Last night I started the process of doing a muffler mod on my clone ms361. I got as far as splitting the can and gutting it out....also bent up a deflector. Hopefully I will have a chance to braze the whole works back together this evening.

Why would they engineer something like that? Are they insane?
I'm not familiar with those. What's the flow path Greg?
Out the exh, thru the holey chute, over the top into the u bend narrowing tube to get to the muffler outlet?

I wish I would have taken a picture from a slightly different angle as it would have clearly shown the path...basically all the exhaust has to pass through the perforated cage into the open can....then the exhaust has to enter a tube near the front of the can and then travel to the rear of the muffler to exit....pretty restrictive I'd say.

I am going to leave the rear exit alone as it isn't hurting anything. I added two 1/2 inch holes on the flywheel side that will be covered by my new deflector. Since I don't need to incorporate a screen, the rest is just brazing it all back together.

Nice work! I went with two 1/2" holes out the front.

I finally got off my butt and installed the tank vent plug and the tank on my trashy 371 build. I'm waiting on a guy to get back to me about the rest of the parts, but he should have everything I need to finish the saw. I decided to get a pic of all the "legendary" 3-series on my bench as well. In order from left to right and front to back, my trashy 371, my brother's W, and my W. His W had a complete rebuild but it's acting like the timing is advanced, I'm suspecting that I, uh, the hack who rebuilt it didn't cinch the flywheel nut down tight enough.

I guess my guys are realizing my Tax Season is finally slowing down!

Repaired a MS461 recoil today, needed a new rope, sprocket and washer (but the pawls were like new). The center hole in the sprocket was enlarged, and the washer was almost non existent.

Also got another MS461 from the same guy ... it is a new saw ... but he didn't bring it to me for mods. The P+C are burned, and he is asking why!

I told him it was likely run too hard with a dull chain, and w/o the muff mod and removing the carb limiters, they are vulnerable to over heating. Told him I'll have to pull the cylinder and if I can save it we will just need a Meteor piston.

IMO, MS461 seems to have a higher % of heat problems, and stripped spark plug threads than MS460s.

I've got a Sandvik .404 x 11 tooth bar tip sprocket on my bench, and an Oregon 3 rivet bar with a blown tip sprocket. The plan is to precisely, accurately, shoehorn the Sandvik tip into the Oregon nose, since I need the bar for my mill and new tips are long, long, nla.
I drilled out the tip rivet for the spur and met my first big obstacle. There is a decent size discrepancy between the Oregon tip center and the Sandvik. Since I'd prefer to keep running my 3/8 milling chains instead of buying/making .404 ones, I'm beginning to wonder if I should just wait for a 3/8 tip to show up.

The Chinese parts for the MS460 arrived today. (oil pump worm gear and new clutch)

First had to remove the oil pump and unjam it, as the old nylon threads had it all locked up.

Then I had to modify the metal arm on the worm gear, and it broke, so I had to transfer the arm from the old worm gear ... the joys of using Chinese parts!

The new clutch drum looks the same size, but would not fit, so I re used the old one.

But the saw now runs well and oils, and when it stops raining I'll install the B+C and give it a final carb adj.

Feels good to have this one done!

Why are you buying Chinese parts?

I also drove the Mustang in some pretty hard pouring rain today, and pushed it a little in the rain to see how the new tires perform.

All I can say is that I am VERY IMPRESSED with both the wet and dry traction provided by the Nitto 555 G-2 tires.

IMO, they really did a good job with these, and the price is very reasonable. I could not be happier with them.

The Mustang has been a beast since I installed the SC back in 2007, but now it is a much easier to control beast!

Also, the new rear tire size (295 X 45 X 18) corrected my Speedometer error, as it now corresponds exactly with the GPS at 20, 40, 70 and 75 MPH.
