I left the trade because of this.
Me too.....
Some days I really miss wrenchin. Some, I don't. Hated winter time when the patient is up on the lift drippin salt water on ya.
Also had a bad taste for neglected grease traps. All in all, I'm glad to have that trade under my belt.

Turned wrenches for my 1st trade. The above would have been called parts guessing. I would have had my arse handed to me by my boss. We used to use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope to pin point the noise location.

Me too. Flat rate and commission are dinosaurs left over from the days of carbs and points distributors and need to go the same way. These days it encourages parts changing rather than proper vehicle repair. The last place I worked at was the worst of two worlds. Very honest place that wouldn't tolerate selling unnecessary repairs, but still on flat rate so I got less than my actual hourly rate almost every week while the parts changers got funneled all the easy stuff. To hell with that, my life is worth more than this.

I always found a long 3/8 drive extension made a good stethoscope.

Sometimes I had to use a long hose if I couldn't pin it down with a screwdriver. That would be when the sound travels through the block, like piston slap.

Did a little bit of cleaning after my month long marathon repair session. Set up for this evening, buddy is coming over and we're getting his red lever 026 running and possibly in the wood. He's also giving me a hand with cracking free the impeller on the 800x I have to do the engine side fan housing on.

Got this today to work on...
owner said it was his dads and it was left with him after he passed. he said it was big and old and when he brought it up my jaw hit the floor.
“Do you know what you have there?”
“A very desirable chainsaw, and its in great shape.”
.404 chain, 32 or 36” bar not sure.
Put some new premix in it and it fired right up. Ran decent too. I have no idea how long it was sitting but from the smell of the gas, a long time.
he wants to get into milling after watching me, so i told him you really are set to go with a saw that big. Has a manual oiling button but i am unsure if there is already an automatic one on it..
any issues i should look out for?937B91A3-633E-4660-B8C7-E69C17C6D5F6.jpegBEC1BEA0-BE09-40B4-B86B-BFA0A6A70A38.jpeg

(Insert large boat joke here)

JK!!

That thing looks like it is in real nice shape.
Heck of a nice saw and should be a stout milling machine.

Saturday night fun with buddy Mike...

800X impeller came off with the 2' 1/2" drive breaker bar and rope in the cylinder with him holding it down while I used the breaker bar. Started on putting her back together as well. Should have it all done Monday evening in an hour or so.

Red lever 026 got a new OEM carb, fuel line and filter. Started right up and got the idle close to where it should be. Ran out of time to put it in the wood. That'll be next Saturday which I have off.

Also some commercial equipment wall of shame broken plastics etc...

Got my gallon of Red Armor oil today too.

It does have a regular automatic oiler as well. The manual button is an override that allows a additional 30-50% more oil than max while it’s pushed in.

Right on, i checked last night and tore it apart and yes i see that now! Thank you

cleaned her up fairly good, what a nicely constructed saw. I def see advantages in this design over the husky 3120 that i have myself.

Mechanic told me I needed a new rack/pinion when I asked about the source of a power steering leak.... I decided to be mechanic instead and investigated further. I found a rotten power steering hose that was leaking onto the rack boot and over various other parts in the engine compartment. The only annoyance is that the hose and power steering cooler are a stupid one piece design... so it costs 125.00 instead of 25.00 lol. But I’m just happy I didn’t play the parts replacer game with the mechanic.

There are usually three or four hoses. My experience is that another one is probably soon to follow. After I replaced the first one I bought the kit and went back in a month later when the second one started

Yup the other line to the rack and pinion is new from when it was put in 1.5 yrs ago. It’s also why I smelled bs from the mechanic because I knew the rack was only 1.5 years old. Dunno why they didn’t change the rotten upper hose in it when they put the rack in.

MS361 rebuild and port job. Getting a 044 carb upgrade as well. Should be a runner when done.
