There is a new stripper out there that is peroxide based. (I may have that wrong, but I’m close). It’s yellow, very thick and has no fumes. When you get it on your skin it will bleach the color out of it but it doesn’t burn. It works in minutes on the toughest paint out there Acryglo & Jetglo. It truly is wonderful. You can wash off with water, dry, degrease and go straight to paint. I’ll get the name on Monday and let you guys know.

Oh yea, bring back Berryman Chemtool. It was the best carb cleaner. They have one out there by almost the same name but it doesn’t work very well. I still use the new stuff to clean chains but that’s all it’s good for. Soaking a cylinder in the old stuff resulted in a cylinder coming out looking brand new. I miss it, no fun to get on your hands (smelled) but it worked.

Yeah, I used to use the stuff in the metal barrel with the air regulated agitator....
It would get changed out every other week
If you left carbs in there too long they would erode away.
Co-worker left a bank of 4 in there over a weekend.... On Tuesday there was only about 2 3/4 left.
Ahhh, the good old days. [emoji846]

A buddy of mine in high school needed to hot-tank some aluminum heads for an engine he was rebuilding, so he took them over to a
transmission shop in town that had a hot tank they called the "Swamp." He forgot about the heads for a couple days and then swung
back by. He asked the owner of the shop if his heads were still in the swamp, and the owner asked him how long they'd been in there.
Karl said it'd been about two days. Walt said, "if it's been two days, all that's left now are the steel bits."
Sure enough, all Karl found were the valves, springs, etc.

After Walt passed away, his family had to hire a hazmat company to come in and drain The Swamp. There's no telling how long that thing had been going.

Just for info Berryman was originally in or near Lima Ohio .If I'm not mistaken they still make "Chemtool " although it might not be the original formula .I remember in the early 60's they peddeled that stuff in gas stations .This before places like Auto Zone ,Parts America ever existed .

This the old or new formula? Either way, it’s by far the best I’ve used.

This is another formulation issue we should all complain about: old skool red vs new age green Brakleen. The ‘new’ non-chlorinated is just awful

I have had good luck with the napa “mac” brand starter fluid, carb and brake cleaner. There not rediculous expensive. The carb cleaner is very strong, will take paint off metal.

Neither of those brake parts cleaners are as good as Walmart's version.

What costume do you wear when you go? OMG. Is there a “Saw it at Walmart” thread?

When I go to Walmart......I get my stuff and get the hell out. I'll be the guy wearing work clothes and walking with purpose.

On a most serious note, this rascal ran so good I rewarded it with a new chain. I’ll run it some more tomorrow. This old stuff is so much fun for me. I expect it will throw some serious chips tomorrow.

Today I had a real big saw on my little tiny bench!!!

After I got done putting a new starter rope, pawls, and a tune up on a MS 460 I also modded the muffler and removed the carb limiters … I just can't help myself!

Then I broke out the Big Boy … the first time I've worked on a MS-880!

I was hoping it just needed a tune up, like his 460, but was not to be. Piston is scored on the muffler side, hopefully the jug will clean up!

Talking about big Stihls with piston problems... 2 x 661c's on my bench, both ridden hard and put away wet:

The one on the left has an interesting looking piston:

What I find interesting is that the saw still ran, down just a little on compression, but no damage to the cylinder nor any sign of rings snagging on the exhaust port. It looks like metal fatigue to me. Anyone else seen anything like that?

I've seen a bunch of 044s/MS-440s throughout the years like that. Usually they were thinning crew saws which get pushed hard all day long.
