I made a cant today for testing oils. 12" wide 3' long. did 1 cut to get a perfect flat and 2 more with each oil. Averaged the cuts out and 87 with VP was faster by an average of 10 seconds. Used .404" full comp chisel for it. Got me 4 nice little shelf boards out of the deal as well.

Tuned to 13.5k for the 87. Went down to 12.8k with the 94 VP. Saw ran nice and the modded carb from Poleman makes a nice difference.
87 with HP2 1 min 19 seconds, 1 min 17 seconds.
VP 94 with HP2 1 min 24, 1 minute 28

Why the differance in tune?

So 87oct = 13.5k
94oct drops it to 12.8k
you leaned the 94 back up to 13.5k

and you get - avg. of 8 seconds difference in cut time. Wow!

Sounds like the compression is more suited to 87 than 94. Be interesting to see 89 or 91.. looks like 94 just too high in this case.
This one is 180-190 if I remember. It has 1/3 of the key advance as well.

Has anybody here tried the royal purple hp 2-c? It's the only oil that I can get in town other than the Stihl stuff or generic stuff that the hardware store has. I currently am using amsoil saber and have for a couple years I am happy with it but I would like to keep my business local if possible.

87 has been fastest in every saw I tested except 1, highly modified ms 280
That is true, however many believe that their chainsaws are ultra high performance cutting edge machines that need special high priced oil and high octane performance fuels. Octane ratings will be debated over & over, those who no what works avoid the debate as its more fun to poke a stick in your eye than argue with those who clearly know better. Simply running a saw outside in wood (no piss revving inside) for a few tanks with regular unleaded 87 and switching to high octane would clearly answer this to anyone with more than a 1/4 of a brain. But I assure you noobs, psp's, pizzrevers and keyboard warriors will be up for the debate 24/7 365 days a year.:lol:

There is allways the possibility that there is more than ONE reason for running a fuel that doesnt conform to your own standards

Ok finished up my little test log. Both were tuned back to 13.5k It was 13.8k with the 93 with no changes from the other day. The mid grade stuff was only 13.7k from the 93. It seemed like it gained a half HP when I got back to the mid grade over the 93.

89-90 1 min 23 1 min 20
93 1 min 38 1 min 32

It sure is. Honestly the 89-90 felt great. Sounded different in the cut as well. Had to richen it up 1/8 turn from the pump 93. The only thing about the 93 this time of year it's not real fresh. That's the only thing I can think of for it to be slower than the VP. Today the wood was thawed for sure so I actually thought it might beat the times from the other day. It's 39° and sunny today and was 33° and overcast the other day.

Do you think you would see the same results if you tuned the saw to the max RPM (in the wood while cutting) for each type of fuel

Reason I ask is that sometimes I think that tuning to a particular RPM is kind of handicapping the fuel
