In the 1990's and earlier many did. Some still do now, like lawnboy mowers and wajax pumps. However chainsaws these are not and neither husky nor stihl has reccomended boat for the last 15 years at the least.
Many oems speced tcw3 oils in the 1990's until it was discovered the performance sucked in high stress applications.
BMEP's in saws are relatively low and do not require an oil suitible for 'high stress applications', they can hamper performance too thats why many oems have specefied fb/c mineral oils for decades with very minimal failures associated with doing so.

Fb/fc are low ash oils designed for air cooled applications and highs tress liquid cooled applications. FD is the latest standard in this line. These oils are not boat oils.. You won't find a FC oil that's not at least partially synthetic.

Whats synthetic and what's not is something the high court can not work out, they decided its a 'marketing term' that any oil bender may use irrespective of what the oil contains and what it does not. As for boat oil, I never mentioned it.

I switched over to red armor last year and really like it I've used just about every premium oil there is but for 12.95 for a six pack 2.5 gallon mix that's half of what everything else cost here without shipping to me anybody else like it I mix 40-1.

You're making 12 gallons of mix for $13. About the same as Klotz for $11 quart. That oil does seem to be pretty good. I've ported 2 saws for a guy that uses it if I remember correctly.

Mobil sued Castrol/BP many years ago and the courts firmed up what's synthetic and what's not.

I was always told that for oil to be classified as synthetic it had to be %100 synthetic. Even if it has %1 Dino oil it has to be classified as semi. I could be wrong. This is just what I've heard

The carrier flues for additive packages is almost always mineral oil.
The real argument starts when you have things like highly refined mineral oils aka group three base oils. Castrol refers to these as synthetics when in reality they are not in the traditional sense of the word.

@bwalker What oils do you use and why? How much mixed gas do you use in a year? Maybe you have already stated it and I've missed it. Thanks.

I am currently running k2 at 32:1 and 800T at 40:1.
I go through a ton of mix per year but most of it is in bikes.

So you use k2 and 800t in your chainsaws?
Currently I use k2 in my 562 and 800 in my ms260.
The bikes get k2 all the time. The 260 will get k2 once I have burnt through the rest of the 800 I have. When my stash of K2 is depleted I will likely go back to yam 2r.

saber update
bucked up a bunch of alder trees 40 to 1 mix ,had some 4 stroking noise cutting with the tip of the bar ,real clean (no 4 stroking) exhaust tone using the middle towards the powerhead with dogs several inches away ,used up a gallon of mix making firewood rounds about 2 foot thick rounds mostly ,my tiny tach did not work ,so i ordered a works connection ,(have not tried it yet)
piston had some blue oil residue on it ,muffler can still sooty but cleaner and dry (lost my 3rd exhaust port rivet ,pried the other one off with my bar wrench ,lost my screen ,the port missing started to melt my brake handle ,need to fix this )

New tach to keep an eye for rpm differences between oils when change brands ,i like the compact size of this brand ,it is held with double stick tape ,see how that holds up to daily use ,if comes off will nut and bolt it .wish i would have put this on when saw was built to keep track of the hours better .muffler mod saber hybrid 1-26-16 tach 006.JPG

I made a cant today for testing oils. 12" wide 3' long. did 1 cut to get a perfect flat and 2 more with each oil. Averaged the cuts out and 87 with VP was faster by an average of 10 seconds. Used .404" full comp chisel for it. Got me 4 nice little shelf boards out of the deal as well.

Tuned to 13.5k for the 87. Went down to 12.8k with the 94 VP. Tuned back to 13.4-13.5k after about 1/4 turn leaner on the H. Saw ran nice and the modded carb from Poleman makes a nice difference.
87 with HP2 1 min 19 seconds, 1 min 17 seconds.
VP 94 with HP2 1 min 24, 1 minute 28
