Ugly Stihl 064 overhaul

After some procrastination, some lack of time and a little bit of generally ignoring this project, I think I now have everything needed to go back together..

So...
I took the recoil


2 screws and the air deflector pulls out.

Unwind the rope..

I took the recoil

I find that I really enjoy working on the recoils, especially now that I know how to wind them up properly. Cleaning the spring can be a pain, but worth it when it is all cleaned out!

Pop off the spring clip


Lift out the pawls, she's got a chipped tooth...


Pull off the pulley


And with a pick and pliers, I dug out the spring cartridge

I use a bit of this on the spring, stud and moving parts. It doesn't get thick and gummy in the cold.


I took the easy route and hit the spring with brake clean and compressed air..
And pop it back in place, lining up the small tab and spring end.


Line up the pulley and spring


Pawls in


Spring on..

Then, realize I need to fish the rope through the back of the pulley, so remove everything I just installed except the spring...

Rope through recoil housing..


Through pulley and tie a knot
And back to where it was previously before I got the dumbs.

It's great to have another 2,3 or 4 sets of eyes, I don't know how many times I have put something together only to have to take it back apart to reset a part or find I missed something. What gets me is the extra screws when I am finished, I think little gnomes are playing tricks on me and tossing in an extra screw or two into the parts pile...no idea where they go....

Let's get this *s-wordshow on the road..


I found that the small insert for the oil hose got a bit boogered when I had to drive it out because it had become one with the case.

I used a few assorted nails, pliers and a body hammer to get it back to round..



I found that the perfect finishing fit was my t15..

I trimmed the end of the oil hose to get rid of the jagged edge


Put some oil on the hose and heat to the bar pad because it just didn't want to go home on its own


And slid the line in


I'll put the insert in later..

And bolted on the pump.

New bearing



Some heat


And bearing is in, making sure the lip for the seal is facing the pump



Let the bearing soak in some heat from the case, and the crank is in that side

Remove the seals


I hit it with air to blow out the bulk of the grease.

Heat the case


And bearing in

I then set the halves together


Once the bearing gets a bit of heat soak, simply tighten the bolts evenly, watching to keep the gap even



Give the crank a tap on each side to center everything up, and it rolls nicely and smooth

Popped off the vent cap

Got the new umbrella


A bit of oil, and start it into the tank


Push it up while giving a pull, and it's in


And pop the cap back on.
I should have time tomorrow to get it pretty well close to being done.

In keeping with my slacker reputation, I never touched this on Sunday..

So,
Trim the gasket


Remove the pump again


Some oil on the oil line


And push it in place



Tube pushes back into the oil line

Pto side seal in.
Need to ease it around the step on the crank before tapping it home


Then bolt up the pump for the last time



2 different seals in the kit must cover changes throughout the series run..


And flywheel side seal in

Steve hooked me up with a fresh slug



Start one end of the clip and holding while popping the other corner in


Having the wrist pin installed helps, keeps it from pushing in too far

I orient the clip opening at the bottom.

Slobber some earl on the wrist pin bearing and put it in the connecting rod

I lay it on its side after putting the piston on to make install of the clip easier.
One thing to note, I forgot to mention piston orientation, the arrow on top points toward the muffler..


Note the ring pin location and ring end tapers..


I start the ring, and roll it around the piston

Repeat for top ring



First time I encountered a base gasket that didn't seem to want to go over the piston..
Had to go under the skirt, then over the crown to make it work


Then slob some oil on the slug
