Some of those E-clips when installed with the sharp shoulder, in, can be a real PITA to remove for service.
I think that’s what happened to my 046, was putting in the Eclip, needed to remove it for some reason and could not get it out, tried for about 45 minutes with several different tools before I said screw it and just put the saw together. It’s working fine but I will be a bear when I need to take it off next time…

Ok I’m going to freak you out now: with the clutch E-clip, I have always purposely installed it with the smooth edges inward, toward the retaining washer. This has never failed me, and always allows for easier removal next time. Some of those E-clips when installed with the sharp shoulder, in, can be a real PITA to remove for service.
Thanks for that tip.

Two types of clutch drum retaining washers. Ed has the annoying one that locks the E clip into in. Can’t get it out easily without flexing the E clip. I never knew there were 2 sides to it. I have had a few saws where taking it off was a real beotch.

Just like any washer, it’s shoulder is smooth, slightly rounded on one side, and sharp on the opposite from when it was stamped out during manufacturing. Just using that to our advantage here. Or cursing at it, depending which way it was installed last..

Usually with it installed smooth side toward the washer, I can pop it off with just a slight twist of the scwrench screwdriver tip.

Excellent thread, I'm rebuilding an 064 so have been following. Just a question re the carb plates both front and back - do you have to have these or can it run/seal ok with out them?

I'd think without them the filter base wouldn't tighten the carb down to the housing and result in an air leak, but I could be wrong.
One of the more knowledgeable 064 guys should be able to answer. @jacob j. Usually has a pocket full of knowledge...

I believe you only need the gasket between the carb and housing. That is what the IPL shows and if I remember correctly how both my 046 and 066 are set up that way. No gasket on the air filter side of the carb.

I thought I'd be cool and use a piece of shrink tube to hold the protective sleeve in place
20231230_102048.jpg

But then realized the wire needs to go here, and the tube made it too thick to fit..
So it got cut off.

Poked the new end on with some pliers

And with a bit of oil, pulled it into the cap

Took the recoil off to position it properly

And that pretty much concludes this episode of a moron with a chainsaw.
A big thank you to everyone who helped me with advice, pieces and parts!
Least ways until it gets passed from moron to moron, for more moronic adventures.
