Yeah buddy, dad and I have been working on putting up new lights in the shop I think by the time we're done we will have over 40, 4 foot lights put up in a 30x50 building..... let there be light!

Painting the ceiling and walls white helps a lot with the lighting. I went with 8' H.O. fluorescent fixtures and had to split my lighting into three circuits for the workshop (2) and garage (1) to avoid overloading the circuits. I added quite a few hanging outlets so I didn't have to string cords across the floor, went with a lot of gang outlets around the perimeter as well.



I also painted the floor of the workshop with two-part epoxy; really helps when it comes time to clean up.



But one feature that I use the most is an air hose on a retractable reel just above my workbench. Reach up for air and store it out of your way when you are finished. I also hung a retractable electrical cord with a drop light, the light doesn't get used much but it does have outlets as well so their is power right within reach.



It's all filled up now...

My shop,60 by 70 has 14 8 foot HO industrial lights,with shades and with -20 degree ballasts and three 400 watt high pressure sodiums .The 8 footers are at 16 feet the sodiums at 22 feet .Sodiums have a lousy color rendition so you need the fluorescents to mix with them .BTW the lights were free .Cheap is good free is much better .I also have two HO's in my garage at the house .

Yeah, the light we were using are dual bulb 4 foot ho lights. We have $1.10 invested in each including bulbs. They are all brand new. Bought a pallet full of the fixtures at an auction for $10 came out to 10 cents per fixture!

We're not carpenters but we're getting the job done.

Yes, I think I see each of them now. That 2-10 came with a fairly nice bar and seemed all original. Sometime I'll have to get you some more good all original stuff.

I might add there's a little trick to flourescent lights .Often in industrial applications the HO's were made for 277 volt which is one leg of 480 Wye to ground .They go very cheaply at auctions but they won't fire on 240 volts .You get a 240 to 24 volt transformer and hook it up boost which gives you 264-maybe 270 plus depending on the line voltage which is not always exactly 240 volts,they work then .Fact my line voltage at the house is 246,at the shop it's 248 --electrical trivia ---

I have ten 4ft ./4 tube troffers in my barn where I store my Macs. (See how i did that?) Got em as freebies from a commercial environment. I have 6 on one 20A circuit, 4 on another. 100A incoming service. Ballast says 240/120. Installed by a pro electrician buddy who did me a huge favor by doing it..., and why I haven't bugged him about a problem I've had with em for quite a while now.

Sorta sounds like the situation you describe, except for the 240/120 ballasts on mine. Sometimes they pop right on when I hit the switch. Sometimes a couple do. Sometimes they just struggle and half flicker. Sometimes they'll pop on after a while if I leave the switch on. Sometimes they won't. Happens on both circuits. Temperature doesn't seem to be any more of a factor than normally would be the case for plain old T-20 tubes. New tubes in most of the fixtures.

Any tips on how to maybe sort this out would be appreciated. When they're all working right I could do brain surgery out there..., er...., uhh..., I mean derive greater pleasure and joy from all my yellow saws.

There's not much you can do with that type fixture for cold weather start .Fact the oldies that had starters fired better than "rapid" start .


Ho's with "cold weather" ballasts are good for about 20 below .You about need to use the higher mercury cold weather tubes on those .

Mercury vapor and sodiums will usually start .It takes a while for the gas to warm up enough to ionize and produce visible light though .You need some ceiling height for these types .

LED's produce good light and will start but they are rather pricey at the moment .

Incandescents will always start but they produce as much heat as they do light plus the fact they are getting hard to find .They are being phased out about every place in the world ,politics more than anything IMO .
