A word ! On that cutting edge of the auger if it gets dull it needs a straight edge not tapered like a wood screw .I've seen those unaware of that do exactly that then hang them up on three point hitch units on tractors .Then you have to use a pipe wrench to unscrew them .It's lttle bit tricky shooting a hole with a little 9N Ford that doesn't have live hydraulics .

Ford 9N and Harold Brock:

I had the pleasure of meeting Harold, sitting down and talking together for a couple of hours when my boss at the time invited him to our place of business. He was and interesting, knowledgeable, and gracious fellow.

My Dad had that McAuger stashed away in a corner of a barn for 40 years or more. I knew it was there but had no plans to fool with it until a buddy asked me if I had a portable auger. He had fenced his backyard and did not install a gate wide enough for a tractor. His wife was wanting him to dig a bunch of holes so she could plant ornamentals. I dragged it out, pressure washed the crud off and cleaned out the carburetor. Like all those old macs, it came back to life. We dug 30 plus holes with it and put it back in the barn.
6 months later (this Monday) I wound up starting on a new fence around my parents' garden. My dad asked me to help him shore up the old hog wire fence that was so decrepit the deer and racoons came and went at leisure. I refused to help him again this year because it was a lost battle. Told him to just get ready to start planting while I tore down the old one and put up 6 foot chain link. He tried to argue with me but I gave him a choice: me buying and installing a new(and much better) fence or him fighting the racoons alone. He gave in. Now I have to get that fence done before the seeds go in the ground.
He already had the tiller hooked up to the tractor so It was easier for me to fire up the old Mac than swap the tractor auger, since I knew the Mac would run.

I've had the misfortune task of boring a hole with a portable auger several times .No matter who made them they are not a pleasure to operate .In my prime I was 220 pounds of solid muscle and even with another person my size if it hangs up you will go around in circles .I might add although a 250 is not the most powerful or the fastest made they produce some where around 5 HP .They used that engine for a lot of things ,about like a Briggs and Stratton .

I disagree on the strict definition of sensible. Having grown up using one, I feel that having at least one bow saw is a necessity. I do put guards on them, though. Unlike the ones my dad had me running when I was a kid.
I took some video of me running my PM700 with a bow since I have never seen one posted and I quite often see people questioning: What the hell is that and how would you use it? I decided not to post it as some might consider it encouragement for potential amputations.
