I don't know if all 5-10s came with a bullfrog carb.If I'm not mistaken the early models came with a bullfrog & the later models came with the SDC.My other 5-10 that I have came with an SDC too.It had an SDC2 on it & was changed to an SDC18.Now it really rips!

They should have come with the bullfrog carb with emphasis on should. Mac sold a carb conversion kit that came with a new rear handle and all the bits to put an SDC carb on the saw. When you get the saw pay close attention to the handle/lower tank assemble. I'm curious to see if it looks newer than the rest of the yellow.

Hmmm...Acres' site says they came with either carb.Maybe an option at the time?Of course Acres has the saw listed as 54cc,another mistake.

Acres has a lot of good information but sometimes it is incorrect. Also nothing is set in stone with McCulloch either. I bet there is a promac 10-10s sitting on a shelf somewhere with a bullfrog carb on it! Lol!

McCulloch perhaps at one time was the leader of the pack .However over the years they couldn't make up their minds which side to place the starter on or which carb to use ..Why pray tell they ever used bull frog or the flat back carbs I'll never know .Then with the flatties use either a choke or that enriching device is another great mystery .

Here's the PM55 all together.Still needs a carb tune.I was going to put a 20 in.bar on it,but was fresh out of 'em.Then I opted to put an 18 in.bar on it,but no 18 in.chains.Finally ended up putting a 16 in.bar & chain on it.I hunted up a clutch cover that wasn't all mucked up & presto!thumbnail.jpg thumbnail.jpg

Got the 1010S out and gave it a little exercise when I got in from out of town this afternoon.
Was running pretty low on fatwood for firestarter, and had a pine stump out back that needed levelling off anyhow.
Sorry, no pics today.
Its about 16" across, and pretty solid, so that should solve that problem for the foreseeable future.

Cleaned up pretty nicely, runs so well I'm tempted to find a project that requires a number of large holes a long way away from electrical power.

I'll have a look in the attic over the garage when it warms up a little to see if the shield / cover from a string trimmer will fit.

I got the $36 5-10 today & went through it quickly before lunch. It has good spark & awesome compression! It was missing the fuel filter & had the wrong plug in it - a CJ8.I fueled it up after putting a new fuel filter in it & the correct plug,it took 3 primes before it started pulling fuel on it's own,but wouldn't idle.I checked the needle settings & they were way off.The lo was only out 3/4 turn & the hi was out about 3 1/2 turns. They lost the idler screw & tried compensating by using the hi & lo needles.I found an idle screw in a 10-10 tank handle & put that in,but still won't idle right.I'll need to pull the carb & go through it.I'm getting fuel in the airbox, probably a sticking needle valve. Also missing a bar plate & the snubber. For $36 I'm not complaining.I'll get pics here when I'm done with it.

Update on the 5-10 - it's kicking me arse.I pulled the carb off,an SDC2 & put a kit in it & it won't hold pressure no matter what I do.It's not leaking at the needle valve & I put 2 coats of nail polish on the welch plugs & it's still leaking down.I have a NOS SDC18 that I was going to use,but can't swap the needles on it as the SDC2 needles are longer.Same thing with an SDC37.If I leave the ortiginal needles in those carbs it's a real biotch trying to adjust or tune those carbs.I did find an SDC65 with the upward pointed needles that was in rough shape.I ran it through my ultrasonic cleaner 4 times & it cleaned up fairly well.I put a kit in it & it has a slow leak down of about 3 psi/minute.I have no choice at this point but to put that carb on the 5-10 & see how it works. The original carb wouldn't hold pressure at all & the saw ran,it just wouldn't idle. The pump & metering cover screws were quite loose & that may have been contributing to the fuel in the airbox.Too cold to be fiddling with the saw outside right now,I'll wait a couple of days.

I put the SDC65 on the 5-10 yesterday & it turned out to be a turd.I found another SDC2 & it wouldn't hold pressure either.I pulled the needles out of the original SDC2 & put them in the SDC18.I'll be putting that carb on the saw today.Getting the throttle linkage hooked onto the trigger was a real challenge with the DSP linkage in the way,but after some selective cussing I finally got it.That type of DSP is the most half-assed set up I've ever seen.On 2nd thought,it's the 2nd most half-assed set up.The Homelite XL-923 takes the prize on that.

I finally have another running 5-10! I pulled the SDC65 off & put the SDC18 on.It wanted to fire, but the carb must've sat in the box for close to 50 yrs, things have a tendency to dry out a bit after that long.Anyway,I kept at it & it finally roared to life, but would cut out on me & die.I suspected a bad coil wire & after I pulled the FW cover off,my suspicions were confirmed.Apparently the FW cover had pinched the plug wire & must've severed the wires under the insulation (the plug wire was run on the exterior of the saw).I swapped out the coil with another one I had laying on my bench & it fired right up & runs great! The idle screw I put in the saw was out of a 10-10 tank handle & apparently isn't the correct one because it still wouldn't idle even with the screw turned in all the way.My McGyver mind got to thinking that the screw needed to be thicker,so I cut a small piece of fuel line & worked it over the end of the screw & reinserted the screw. Now the saw idles beautifully.I was supposed to get my new 24 in.bar today for it,but UPS is now telling me I'll get it on Fri. Pics to come.

I got the 24 in.Oregon bar today for the 5-10 & I thought the bar would be using an 84 DL chain. No problem as I just bought 6 like new Stihl chains with 84 DL.I put the chain on the bar & it was way too long.I looked at the bar to make sure I had the right one & saw 81 DL stamped into it.The bar is an Oregon 240RNDD176.My PM850 used an 84 DL chain on a 24 in.bar.I just bought a 24 in.chain for my Homelite 410 & it used 81 DL on a 24 in.bar.I assumed that on the D176 mount bars they used 84 DL & on the D196 & D096 mount bars they used 81 DL.I guess ya learn something new everyday.I ended up ordering a new 24 in.Oregon chain for $20 + free shipping from the same seller on Amazon as I ordered the chain for the Homelite 410.Pics will be delayed.
