I’ve got a lot of cows that need to put on weight. It is just now starting to green up. Will there be issues with their rumons? I’ve never counted on my feed to be mostly silage. Just trying to cover as many bases as I can!

You're gonna be fine. Keep an eye on their stool. That'll tell you if you're off.

When are you planning on starting to feed it? Might be a good idea to have it tested for nitrates since it's drought stressed.

Hard to believe we've had around 8" of rain in the last 2 & 1/2 weeks. Beens are looking good.

Corn round here, is just stalks now, after the last two hail storms that moved threw here.

This one is one of the better ones I've seen, some of the fields are just stubble stickin' out of the ground a foot or so.....

Damn, that whole field looks ripped. That can't be good.

Yeah!

1st storm dumped 3" hail....

IMG_20180728_213410.jpg

2nd storm week later, dumped quarter sized hail. They seemed to have more velocity and did more damage then the big ones.

Hedgerow, or anyone else, have you ever fed almost straight silage to cattle? If so how far can you go without having problems? Usually feed silage to stretch the hay, but I had very little.

Lost several feeders back in 1977 in the drought, with nitrate poison from feeding them drought stricken corn silage. Not have chopped corn since then. ( they were feed no hay then ) As we had none to feed.

Planning to wait a month from it was chopped. Will I still need to check the nitrates?

Yes. It doesn't hurt to have the nutritional analysis of the silage, either. Knowing how many carbs and how much protein is in it, etc. can help you decide what else needs supplemented.

The longer the better but if you have to start at a month then you do. They gotta eat.

I'd test for nitrates now to see if there's any/how much. You might be forced into changing your plans. If high levels pull another before feeding. Ifno/low nitrate levels pull your nutrition test after 45 days from start of fermentation.
