For newbies like myself, I go through trying to research information. I want to ask questions but I don't want to be a pita (pain in the ass).
I've saw some responses to newbies along the lines of..
I answered that years ago, research it...I would love to sit with a builder..watch, learn, etc..
Don't be intimidated by the "few", most here will gladly help you, it is what the site is all about. Besides, the search features don't always work that great!
I've been ragged about providing the same info many times, but when there is someone new to the site, or someone existing asks about a saw they have not worked on before, I share what I know.
I've also been thanked by some (usually in a PM) for providing info, so I ignore any naysayers.
Bill provides some great advice there … I practices porting on several AM jugs before I ever attempted to do work to an OEM jug. It takes some practice to grind where you want to. Also, OEM jugs are generally harder than AM jugs.
For a workbench, I often C Clamp the jug to the wooded portion of my trailer, with a piece of plywood to protect the jug. You can get away with using the cheap grinding tool from HF for intake and exhaust ports, but buy some better grinding bits from ebay or amazon.
