For newbies like myself, I go through trying to research information. I want to ask questions but I don't want to be a pita (pain in the ass).
I've saw some responses to newbies along the lines of..
I answered that years ago, research it...I would love to sit with a builder..watch, learn, etc..

Don't be intimidated by the "few", most here will gladly help you, it is what the site is all about. Besides, the search features don't always work that great!

I've been ragged about providing the same info many times, but when there is someone new to the site, or someone existing asks about a saw they have not worked on before, I share what I know.

I've also been thanked by some (usually in a PM) for providing info, so I ignore any naysayers.

Bill provides some great advice there … I practices porting on several AM jugs before I ever attempted to do work to an OEM jug. It takes some practice to grind where you want to. Also, OEM jugs are generally harder than AM jugs.

For a workbench, I often C Clamp the jug to the wooded portion of my trailer, with a piece of plywood to protect the jug. You can get away with using the cheap grinding tool from HF for intake and exhaust ports, but buy some better grinding bits from ebay or amazon.

The first few digits of my serial number are illegible but it definitely has the X at the end. Within this thread the oil pumps should also be addressed.

Its all good...I understand...I can be grumpy as the next old fart...I think it would help if the search engine worked better...or was laid out within say the repair section...all the how to do "X"...
Videos..whatever...from the basic maintenance all through a rebuild...and all the mods...
*s-word ton of work...hell, maybe it is there and I haven't found it yet...
I know there is more than I can read and shift through quickly...I've spent hours just reading...my wife will ask, wtf are reading about...chainsaws, I'll reply and she just shakes her head and walks away....hey grab me beer on you way back baby...
Sometimes I get a beer and sometimes I gotta get my own beer...either way, I still have beer...

Tons of knowledge lurking in this site, and if you ask, someone usually knows where it is.

Sometimes I find things in this site by using a search engine outside of the site. Go figure!
Right! That's actually what lead me to this site...a cousin of mine told me that his favorite saw to use on the farm is his 361 but you can't get them new any more...I set out in search...thinking I'd fine one new one in a still shop somewhere...that search lead me here...I now have one nib 361 sitting in the garage and one in the que to be ported by mmws.
I have no use for either of these saws...but CAD is real...lmao...oh and this past weekend...I slipped into WV and dropped off essentials to my Dear Cuz who said I couldn't and showed him that I could...
During my search I thought why not build an online sales for these no longer available in the us saws..
In the middle of doing that...covid19...now I'm laid off..waiting to go back to work..being bore I decided to tear my 028 apart...compression was @ 145 cold...it would drop to 135 when it warmed up...it was spitting fuel out both carb and muffler..
I bought seals and all new rubber for her and even though I find nothing wrong with any of it, I will replace it all since I tore her down.

Good Deal, a 361 is one of the Stihls I do not own, but definitely one of the greats. If I did not have a MOFO 360, 10 mm 044 and two ported 462s (MOFO + MMWS) I'm sure I'd be looking for one!

Ditto the 064 - instead I have a couple of Hybrids (CFB and MOFO) and a MOFO 460.

There are just so many you can run, but they are all just nice to have!

Any help id’ing my 034? I’m thinking reg 034 but date on chain brake says 1994 and the muffler looks like a 036 has a red lever front mount tensioner with adjustable oiler.83BEEF9B-A1F8-424E-B7DB-3C3CFD03594B.jpeg654E5835-D5B4-4DCE-8687-7812E526FF55.jpeg A55B3D5E-E236-4E4A-993D-D67B2777B25A.jpeg4027AC08-B0C3-4C75-85CF-D6AF1E5F25C8.jpeg 5ACCD8EF-BFAD-40B9-89DD-451A940B90BD.jpeg

Clean it up first.
Go to the thread and video on cylinder salvage. Someone will be along shortly with some links for you.

Meteor piston kit, new bearing at the dealer along with gaskets and your good.

If a Meteor is hard to find Hyway makes ones but get better rings like OE or Caber. A good piston in OEM does show up on Ebay and these forum or put up a Wanted Add here and be surprised. Surely other pistons can be made to fit. Most people like those sporty old 034's. I have a very low hours 036 that never gets used tucked away.
