I'm gonna show the various jugs that came on these saws.

In general, there are the 46mm versions that came on the 034, and 48mm versions that came on the 034S and the 036/MS360.

There are variants that exist, so if you're buying a jug you'll need to beware. A bore measurement is the only way you'll be certain. For instance, KS and Mahle have made cylinders for Stihl for both variants. Some between model castings exist that are odd.

There are some small issues that occur with fitment of the top covers and mufflers when swapping jugs out.

I'm gonna comment on the mufflers as well. Someone needs to correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. You can take pleasure in telling me I'm wrong, just back it up with a pic. I'd rather learn more than be correct.

In fact, please add whatever you can to this thread.

Here's a 46mm 034 Standard variant.

Mahle will have the bore ID cast into the side of the base. KS will not.

Some defining features are an intake roof TIT, a cast in Decomp boss on the flywheel side of the jug (looks like one, never saw drilled), and a small second cooling fin over the exhaust port. This small second fin plays a role in cover fitment. The front air dam under the top cover on the 034 and 034 Super is taller in height and tailored to fit these short second fin jugs. The dam will need to be trimmed if swapping in a later 036 jug (see below).

The standard 034 46mm jugs have a fin on top where the central machining depression exists on the 34S and 36 jugs.

Here's an 034 Super 48mm jug.

These came in Mahle and KS variants as well, but they are typically KS.

A member here sent me a NOS Mahle 034 Super piston/cylinder to use on @dall 034 Super I'm building for his inaugural address in 2020. It's strange to say the least. The ports are more like an 036 jug, but the outer fins are all 034 Super with the shorter second fin. Plus, it came in a box labeled as Kölbenschmidt but it isn't one. I'll try to snap some pics later today.

I apologize for the sideways ex port pic. @Chainsaw Jim has a nice pic of one IIRC. The roof is flat as a board and seemed to hold up. The inner chamfer side of the roof isn't higher in the center either. It reflects what the roof looks like viewed from the outside.

The intake has no tit and isn't an upside down teardrop like an 036 has.

Short second fin. (See last pic. The single top pic here is 034, not 034S-can anyone see why?)

No "Decomp" boss.

Here's 4-48mm jugs. The two on the left are KS 034Super. The two on the right are decomp 360's.

The KS jugs are always made of a different allow. They are shinier than Mahle and harder by Rockwell. They are a Pita to port vs. Mahle IMHO-mostly cutting a band by hand.

Look at the front 2nd fins. 036 not decomp jugs have the top like the KS jugs below, but the elongated 2nd fin like the jugs on the right.

Finally, the 036/MS360 jugs.

I don't have a non decomp 036 jug readily available for pics. I can try to snap a pic later today.

These were both Mahle and KS, but are typically Mahle.

There's also a late variant MS360 jug that's labeled as "Stihl" and tends to be super Shiny and AM appearing. I don't have one here to take a pic. If you have one, please add a pic.

Note the rounder Ex port roof, the longer second fin, and the teardrop intake port.

Here's the odd 034 Super Mahle jug that's going on @dall saw. It's possible the boxes were swapped. It's NOS, 48mm and has the newer 036 style exhaust port roof, but a short second fin.

Perhaps "Kolben" means piston in German?

Mufflers are next.

034 Standard and Super both have a heat shield on front. The cover slips under a groove in the roof of the muffler body and the front of the muffler is secured by the 2 lower bolts only.

They are front outlet. Not PTO outlet like the 036 can.IMG_0641.PNGIMG_0642.PNG

Here's where I need some help and correction if necessary.

From what I've read, but haven't done, theses are the variation.

034 Standard muff bolts directly to o34 46mm jug with just a gasket.

034S needs a spacer and gasket between its ex port and the 034 muffler.

036 muffler has Ex gasket and heat shield. No spacer.

All I've got left is the cases. There are some differences there as well.

The starter bolts are M4 on 034, they are M5 on 036.

Some 034 came with a super slick skeletonized 084ish connecting rod. I've never seen on an 036 crank. @Backtroller has one in his saw.

The plastic clutch surround is one piece on the 036. On the 034, it's 2 piece, like an 044. Early 034 have push in plastic covers. No bolt on the smaller half. The 034 also came with a 2 piece screw in piece. Have no pics now, sorry.

The 034 are German made and have a front chain tensioner.

The 034S and 036 have side tensioners.

This ones an assumption. I've never seen a Non-German (SN start 1) 034 Standard or Super. I've never seen a non-USA (SN start 2) made 036.

So, at least by my own experiences, a side tensioner 1125 made in Germany is a super.

Hope this was informative. Please opine and add whatever you can. This is one of my favorite saw series. Just the right size for me and what I typically cut. When ported, they are a thing of beauty and a true one saw plan for many. It's what I grab first when I have to cut.

Spacers are also needed when using an 036 style muffler with an 034 jug. The upgrade to a heat shield may necessitate a mod to the cover or an 036/360 cover.

More responses coming soon...

Good stuff. Some standard 034s have side tensioners.
