I love this place, we are 50clicks from some of the most beautiful country on this continent, some of the best hunting and some real good people here.
The United Association (UA) is throughout the US and Canada. Look them up in your area, can’t hurt to check into it. Apprenticeship is a great opportunity to learn while getting paid. I’ve met a bunch of Canadian UA instructors over the years, all good dudes.

I have to say that my dream plumbing gig would be either an A class gasfitter doing boiler service, or, building a nuclear power plant plumbing system.
I would love to see how the heat exchangers work from the reactor to the steam turbines, stuff like that brings a bog smile to my face.

steam like i mentioned i know very little about, we dont use it here like they do as much on the east coast. But working in new york under the streets, identifying proper isolation valves for buildings/systems and seeing how it all works would be amazing.
That’s why you want to be a Steamfitter, not a plumber like @stihl livin or a boilermaker like @dall!
:D

I install and tune wake boat engines for Malibu Boats. Our big engine is a supercharged Chevy Lt4 with a little over 600 shaft horsepower. It’s a beast. Pictured is me and the other two engine guys. And one of our small engines, a 450 horsepower Chevy

These are steam lines in a nuclear power plant. Narrow groove welds 5/8-3/4” wide and 1.5-2” thick.

How many passes to complete something like that mate?

We can deposit 5/32-3/16” a pass on it. When you get close to filling out it won’t hold all the heat and those layers get thinner. I think on average we took 10-12 fill passes and 2-5 to cap the outside with a good transition

Awesome. Beautiful work.
I sometimes find site welders a bit suspicious of us operations guys, as if we are checking up on them, but in my case I am mostly in awe of their craft and keen to see how they do it.
Most don't make me catch a running angle grinder after they get to know me...

Wow!! I have worked with welders fitting sch 40 8-10” with a root, then two passes, sometimes a cap if i remember correctly. But 12 passes just floors me!

This job started in 2012 and should finish one unit this fall and another the end of next year. There’s 1000s off prints and they’re not for the public as of now. The design is AP 1000 reactor so there’s a good bit of info on it online.

Some of the heavy wall we’ve done here takes 20-30 lbs of rod to fill. The thickest I ever welded by hand was 4.75” thick 9 chrome with a 20” inside diameter.
