That is why I dispatch vermin as quickly as possible.I hate for animals to suffer, even ones I don't particularly care for (such as garden-munching groundhogs). You did the right thing. Compassion for a helpless animal is never the wrong thing, although it sometimes takes forms that we'd rather it wouldn't.

Started with scraps of wood, and strips sawn from a 2 x 6 at Menards.
Good instructor.
Still needs final sanding, and varnish.

Titebond II is water-resistant, but some people will use it for paddles, since they are varnished.

Marine epoxy (e.g.West System) is very waterproof, but more expensive, and fussier to work with.
