Continental WinterContact TS860 for my moms and my car, brand new sets for both cars.
I am curious to find out how they'll behave in rain, snow, mix of both.

I don't do high mileage so that I don't worry about wear.
I drive winter/summer tyres 6 months a year each.
I feel that winter tyres loose their properties after 6-7 years of age no matter the mileage - at least the ones I used so far seemed to do so.

I'll be putting winter tires (Blizzaks) on the Mustang and Truck in about 2 weeks.

I try to minimize the miles on them.

Are you guys allowed to run studded tires?

I don't believe we are, but I would not run them anyway, they are horrible on dry pavement!

The only possible reason for them is solid ice.

To quote "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy"......Resistance is ...Futile . :)
Hilarious movie.
I love the part with the fly swatter things smacking them, cracks me up every time I watch the movie.

I did not even try to resist . . . ;)

No spiked tyres allowed in Croatia, nor in most European countries for that matter.
I'd love to try them though, must be better than chains.
I believe the Swiss are allowed to run spiked tyres a specific period of the year.

In Norway we’re allowed to run studded tires still. Most don’t, though. There’s a little tax incentive to run non studded.
I have a set of chains in the truck if it ever gets bad enough with snow. I’m here so rarely in the winter, so they haven’t been out in a long time.
Just noticed the Norwegian Postal Service runs studded. Heard him come up the road. Lol.

Studs don't work nearly as well as chains, they are just more convenient.

I have sometimes needed chains when I am off road.

It depends on where you are and what the conditions are, there’s a good share of the time a set of old school chains or studs do better out here in our concrete “snow” we get.

Studs for ice, chains for snow. That’s how it is. Chains aren’t gonna do much on black ice, or thin ice. They just make you sit there and jump. They’ll work on thick ice, but you have to be loaded good for them to dig in.
On the old rigs we used to have we ran tightly spaced studded chains. I had a pic, but can’t find it. Less jumpy to run, and lots of bite.
We ran studs on the front tires on the trucks that had rear mounted knuckle booms, just for that little extra bite.

Yeah, some of the gas drilling companies around here make us run 2 sets of chains on the drive axles, and single chains on the steer axles.

I always find several chains in the ditch during the spring thaw, and try to pick them up when I can. You can always resize them and use on smaller vehicles...

Studded tyres were really good (back in the day here in UK) on my country roads that never see any grit or a plough. Once the snow packed down into snow ice they really came into there own for hills and ..Having !!.. to stop when there is nowhere to go on single track back roads and you meet another vehicle head on.
Chains were good too but the studded tyres tended not to cut up the surface if we ended up with pack snow ice for a while...needed folks to be mindful though.

That’s exactly how we ran them too. Required as a minimum by the DOT here in Norway. Trailers are required to have one chain per axle as well.
Plenty of trucks from other European countries are stopped on their way in, passing the border without the required amount of chains. They’re not allowed to go any further until they have, in whatever way, acquired the appropriate equipment. Proper tires with a minimum of M+S rating is required too.

It’s hilly here, and the mountain passes can be grueling in the winter.
