the other day i was sharpening a new stihl chain for the neigbor. Since it was new i decided to see what angle the forward lean was on the side plate. today i found one of my new oregon chains and did the same thing. would anyone like to guess what the results i found? or does anyone know what they are?

not the top plate but the side plate.....20220322_160103.jpg 20220322_160159.jpg 20220322_160215.jpg
its at 90° to the chasis or 0 forward lean on both oregon and stihl. now the question is where does everyone measure to set up grinding. I have measured from the top of the cutter on the top plate and its usually 9 or 10°

I look at them on the bar..eyeball forward lean, then run it..make changes if not what I need. So much individual preference involved in the process. I've gotten to the point that I have a favorite setup for work chain and it only needs depth gauge changes from hard to soft, but the hardwood setup still beats RS in softwood.. crazy how much is left on the table with stock round chain compared to square ground proper.

i have ran lots of chain with way more of deep cut into the tie strap than that. one time an older grinder got tipped over and it would grind way deep into the straps on one side. it was before we knew how to fix it with shims

Just getting started in the square ground game. Read the entire thread the last couple days, great info, thanks everyone for sharing. I have a Silvey RS2 and I have a couple RS-2 specific questions.

1. Is there a lock for loosening/ tightening the wheel retainer nut?

2. Is the arbor LH or RH thread?

3. Does anyone have a picture of the chart for wheel wear? Mike posted all the Silvey manuals (thanks Mike) and in the RS-2 manual they mention it but don’t show a picture of it.

1) No lock.
2) RH thread.
3) The wheel wear scale and the for-aft scale of the carriage where pretty much a joke. You'll just have to mess with it to get it where you want..
