Well, a couple of weeks ago I picked up a Simington 451B and started reading this thread. Useful stuff in there. Whole lot of not real useful off topic stuff, but still.

I've been buying square chain and square filing it until I bugger it up for the last 17 years. I almost pulled the trigger on a Silvey who knows how many times in those years, but I couldn't pass up the deal on this Simington and finally have a grinder. I've been trying out different angles for my full size saws, and none of them have sucked yet, so that's cool.

My findings are about the same as most people's. Single point dresser is great for shaping in new wheels, multi point leaves a nicer finish on the wheel and consequently on the tooth. The blue wheel is great on the swing arm machines where the corner of the wheel takes more of a beating. When converting, roughing in with a salmon wheel and not really worrying about a perfectly dressed corner, then finishing with the blue is a great way to go for me.

Converted some Archer 3/8LP last night for my wife's little battery Makita. That's pretty rad. I'm a Stihl/Oregon guy for sure, but that full chisel Archer in 3/8LP is hard to beat. I'll still stick with Oregon once my roll of 72CJ runs out for my full size saws, but there will be more 25' rolls of Archer 3/8LP in my future.

so i cut some walnut today and this is what the chips look like from the settings i use on my grinder.

I have been trying to chose some common things to compare with, when describing how chips should look. Most people are familiar with food, so my current comment is:

'Your saw chips should look like cole slaw, and not like corn meal. Unless you are noodling, in which case they will look like fettuccine.'

Here's the Archer 3/8LP that I ground up. Some impressive chips for a saw that runs on a single drill battery.

Here's some Oregon semi-skip I ground up a little more on the aggressive side. It's the only semi-skip chain I have in my shop, I've never really been impressed by the stuff. Haven't had a chance to cut with it yet, had other chains on my 32" bars the last time I went out for firewood.

Edit: Now there are some pics

View attachment 294199 Hey guys, first time Grinding with a 451C, not sure how close my angles are but here is what I have got so far. Critique Away
Your corner looks good to me. A little hard to see clearly. Do you have a pic of the top and side plate?

that should cut just fine you will need to take a couple of swipes off the depth guage and probably need to take the corner down on the gullets either carefully with the grinder or a round file
