You can run 25-30 degree top plate for work chain. You want a steeper underneath angle if you do that. It will give you more forward lean when you do it and a stronger corner.

Would be nice if the dresser blocks had some degree marks on them... If nothing else it would be nice to have for a point of reference so you can adjust your machine quicker for different chains.

I ground everything the same and filed chains for faster. Eventually I got where I didn't like how the ground chains cut compared to filed.

The prosharp has marks A B and C for shaping the wheel. Makes a good work chain.

This is what Shaun drew up. Very very close to the marks the prosharp produces

So, if a Pro Sharp can't be found at a reasonable price, does the 451C Simington (and/or other swing arm designs) do a good job for work/light play chains? I wouldn't mind learning to file but am set on buying 1 or more grinders for speed of service and dead-reliable repeatability.

I am by no means an expert at chains and never will be, pretty well a simpleton here. Having said that, I love my 451c, is it overpriced? Absolutely, brand new for what you get I honestly believe this grinder should be more in the price range of 550 600 bucks at max. LC you ask about dead set reliability and repeatedly the same? Well in my opinion this grinder fits the bill. I will never use my 511a for sharpening again, it is now regulated to raker grinding only. I just might be very lucky, don't know, but every chain I now do is consistently easy and quick, usually takes 10 minutes or less to grind a chain, and if I can do it this quickly then somebody with more dedication than I have would easily become a pro at sharpening with this grinder. I am sold on it, $1100 dollars sold?....slowly coming around to that, but hey I'm incredibly wealthy! Take the plunge!

They really hold their value. If you hate it, you will probably recover all but the shipping. You could wait a Long time to grab a Pro Sharp, and you will need luck on your side as well.
I tend to be esoteric, and I am very fond of my ancient swingarm. Square filing takes special DNA if you ask me...

You guys do know they modify the swing arms to do race cutter things the other grinder dont do. ;) Least the ones I saw in past.

The guy at Madsens was actually telling me back when they were available. I was deciding what grinder to buy. There were a few things you could machine a little more and get 35° top plate angles if you desired.
