Here is 044#1, an un ported 044 with 28" B&C running RSL (right off the reel) in 19" Oak. Not bad for a un ported saw!

Saw sounds bad azz... some prefer music, I prefer 2 cycle with unrestrictive muffler ... its ok if "normal" people call me nuts.

Is that with huztl muffler? Must be. I want to hear it live... video does muff modded saws no justice.

Taking the 044 to a tree job tomorrow so bro can try it. Still waiting for huztl from China. Microburst in Haverhill Monday dropped a willow on a house.

Also have a crane job coming up monster tree another willow... junk wood...

I'm very pleased with the way the MS-440 runs, however, I think 044#1 is just a freak of nature or something.

In the same wood, with the same mods, 044#1 is about 2 seconds faster.

My buddy has a 460 like that. It runs with ported ones and its bone stock. Not even a muffler mod. It's a head scratcher.

I have heard some builders say that virtually every saws comes through with different port timing. Often it does not make much difference, but every now & then you get lucky. It was always a strong running saw, but it seems to have really taken to the "at home mods" including the base gasket delete and timing advance.

A good 046 cylinder would probably run close to a mild ported bad 460 cylinder.
There not as bad as the 1122 cylinders but a good cylinder stock will make a better ported cylinder.
A good timed stock cylinder will be stronger generally as a poor timed cylinder ground to the same numbers.
In a 1122 stock timing plays a major role in how well it runs ported.

That's why there's very strong and very poor running stock stihls.

Better timing and some have a d chamber but it's not necessary.

046 and a 460 run different but nor like there bigger brother.

My first year 046 was noticeably stronger than my 460 stock.
My 460 is stronger ported but it's taken farther.

My experience has been that most 046s don't run much different than 460s, the exception being the 1st year 046-D jugs.

My 046 would not out cut my 044 till I got it ported, IMO, porting makes a big difference on those saws. (at the time both saws had dp muff cover and HD-2 filter, but had not done the timing advance or gasket delete to either saw).

I'm not sure how much difference a gasket delete would make on an 046 or 460, but my 044 and 440 have really responded to it.

Both my ported 460s have 046-D jugs, and I think they are even just a hair stronger. I hear the D jug results in about an extra 10 psi, plus I think (in general) they came with better stock port timing.
