how can you tell a 046 cylinder apart from a 460 cylinder ?

Other than the 046-D cylinders, I know of no way to tell the difference, but others may know more than I do.

I have a stock 460 jug that Dr Al says looks like a ported saw, but we did not check the timing of the ports on it, but Al was impressed with the look of it. I did not get to run it with that jug on it.

My experience has been that most 046s don't run much different than 460s, the exception being the 1st year 046-D jugs.

My 046 would not out cut my 044 till I got it ported, IMO, porting makes a big difference on those saws. (at the time both saws had dp muff cover and HD-2 filter, but had not done the timing advance or gasket delete to either saw).

I'm not sure how much difference a gasket delete would make on an 046 or 460, but my 044 and 440 have really responded to it.

Both my ported 460s have 046-D jugs, and I think they are even just a hair stronger. I hear the D jug results in about an extra 10 psi, plus I think (in general) they came with better stock port timing.
I never really got into them but they do make big gains ported.

There a perfect saw for a popup.
No need to lower the exhaust port.

As far as compression goes with D jugs.

I put a 46 D in my hybrid, base gasket delete and shaved .022 off the base.

I just finished up this 12mm no decomp 044 today. I'm very glad I didn't fatten the squish band as it's a knuckle buster as it is.
These are the first cuts after initial tuning so there is going to be a good improvement once the rings set. The chain is from my 064/066 hybrid so the rakers are way too low for this saw.
