Since we're talking muscle care era. Everything in school parking lot had 300hp in late 60,s. While in service I picked up a 69 mustang 428super cobra jet with shaker scoop ramair, drag Pac 430,s Detroit locker. Every rod was knocking and the Dodge dealer sold it to me as junk. Talk about hole shots. It sets in weeds behind barn with a 70 mach one and 69 289 gt.

I thought they went to the 302 (from 289) in 68. The 69 s/b a 302. How bad a shape are they in, and are you selling them? I used to have a very rare 68 428 SCJ with the 4:30 drag pack option. They had staggered rear shocks and an engine oil cooler.

Ya I think your correct, but stranger things have happened! I have a sbc 400 block that was cast in 1974, but the vin stamp saying it was in a 1977, 3/4 pickup, it’s hard to believe gm let a block sit that long , but I have it! It kinda blows my mind, it’s not a replacement block, but what company would store block for that long

They believed in "seasoning them". Letting them sit for some time made them more stable after they were assembled.

Almost all Ford FE blocks (390, 428, 427) are stamped "352". Even my 66 427 Ford Hollman and Moody cross bolted/side oiler block was stamped 352.

Yes I think the gt might be a 302. Can't remember. The 69 scj had lots more in drag Pac package but I didn't want to bore ya. 427 lemans rods, high nodular iron block, 427 med rise heads, close ratio 4 speed. I put in adjustable rockers with solids and big 427 cam and headers. I'm sure I'm forgetting some but ya get the idea ford was serious about muscle. This car was built to drag race at factory. No power steering, brakes or Windows. No air either on a NC car. Oh yeah all my Ford's had hearsts with t handles. 66 stang 289built, tri power, 4sd, 71 maverick 302 4sd.

I am so sorry for screwing up this thread. Porting costs. Low if ya do your own minus cost of tools and parts ya screwed up. Good reasons to get experienced porters plus the fact final product is "moor betta".

Exactly, let those who have the experience know how and tools do the work,
they know what is required and how to get there, its cheap when you get a
saw that works as expected, it comes back to you in good order and tuned too,
sure a saw shop would charge you a fair bit to tune up your saw, if they could,
but who knows your saw inside out and can do a better job, a porter.

Not a problem, it looked like you guys were having a good discussion. My only real car/truck knowledge is old Toyota pickups. So I can’t really talk about horsepower.
A mechanic friend once told me the reason Toyota were such a good engine is because they never produced enough power to break anything, so the only reason they fail is from wear. I think he was probably right. Carry on

Some family members drive powerful cars, all I hear is, it needs new drive shaft, cv joints clutch, flywheel and such, with power comes responsibility,
a heavy foot is not conducive to keeping that power at safe levels, meanwhile
my under powered car has gone thought two road tests in a row without spending a cent on it, well I was charged for air, €2.00 at an air dispensing machine, never thought I would be buying air, changed times.

The 428 SCJ came with modified Lemans rods (the 428 CJ did not) and light weight sodium filled valves. 428 CJ and SCJ heads have the same ports as 427 medium riser heads but the same valves and combustions chambers as 427 low riser heads. (They were developed by Tasca Ford).

To put true 427 medium riser heads on a 428 you would need pop up pistons and you would have to notch the smaller bore to clear the valves.

The Lemans rods were modified with smaller cap screws for clearance reasons ... the 428 has a longer stroke and smaller bore and the standard Lemans rods would not fit.

My brother had a 428 SCJ in his 69 Talladega.

Had a Nissan 240sx once, would do 124mph in a 1/4 mile with a 5spd. Hit 160mph and back down to 35mph in a mile one night too. That was fun. Had enough gearing for 180mph at 8000rpm roughly so was about topped out.

Should add it only had a 2.0L 4 cylinder in it too.

That will be the famous SR20DET. Great engine and widely used by Nissan

It was either that or an rb swap, have always wanted one, or an r32-33 or34
Unfortunately "Nissan Tax" has driven the cost of everything associated with both engine series through the stratosphere.

Honda K24 is the next 4 cylinder big thing. But don't tell anyone til you've bought yours.

K24 would build some good power with a turbo. Honda heads flow really well and correlate in the dyno numbers. Plus they’re just a solid engine in general.
