I think the engine had just over 600hp, and the wheels got something like 580hp. It's been a while. The number 594 comes to mind, not sure if that was at the engine or wheels. I just know it had to be run on a little higher octane than 93 pump gas for normal driving, and much higher for racing.

My stepbrother hit 205 mph in a naturally aspirated stock body Ford Ranger at salt flats.

WENDOVER, Utah, October 19, 2001 -- On the Bonneville Salt Flats, a place recognized by many as the world's home of high speed, a Ford Ranger driven by Mark Bill roared off toward the distant white horizon -- and further into the record books. Never before had a pickup been driven so fast in the flying mile: a speed of 205.208 m.p.h.

He said 200MPH on the dyno, which eliminates the wind resistance, so I will buy it.

My 68 390 GT had 3.25 gears and a close ratio 4 speed (1st was 2:20 to 1). Tires were BFG Radial Trans Ams G X 60 X 15. The engine had an aggressive cam and lots of power, it would do 6,800 RPM in any gear. I think the speedo was very close to right. It had the optional built in 140 Speedo and 8 grand tach.

I estimated top speed to be 160 MPH, but I never took it up there. Got up to 135 MPH once, and it was not stable.

My current Mustang is stable at 150, but almost impossible to find a place safe to do it, so I don't anymore. My current Mustang is a 5 speed, but it will do that in 4th and the redline is only 6,250 RPM (the engine build will handle more, but the computer shuts it down).

I have checked my current Mustang against 3 different GPS devices - with 295X45X18 tires on the back, the speedo is accurate. With factory tires, the odometer is accurate, but the speed is overstated by about 6%.

Ya, it’s pretty accurate. Lol 02590B59-7909-4CA9-9DFB-E44541A4DC6E.jpeg

372 ci roush nascar motor, about 800hp
Correct. He was not supposed to be driving it, but Pro driver became ill. Mark had to make several qualifying runs before he could go for record. When he returned to Ford, they explained to him, they had invested far too much money in him to be doing that. He sure got talked about around Ford. Lady who keeps track records called big players and said a rookie just set a record, what do you have? Roush mechanic said to him, do not look at speed, look at tach. If it is at 8500rpm you are going to be in trouble. Mark stated getting it moving was hardest part of driving it.

Ya, it’s pretty accurateView attachment 326873

Thanks very much for that. I always told folks 70, 90, 120 and possibly 160 as fast as you could shift the gears!

I had a T handle Hurst shifter.

That light 68 Fastback literally jumped like a frog every time you shifted a gear, and as soon as you shifted it was time to shift again.

The biggest trick was getting the launch right. Too much engine and your tires just went up in smoke, but I was pretty good at it!

With the aggressive cam, it did not have much low-end torque, but it came on like it had turbos! At 3,500 RPM it just pinned you to the back of the seat. The cam had 320 duration. The stock 427 solid lifter street cam had 306 duration. I believe this was the cam Ford was running at NASCAR in the mid to late 60s.

I got my 1973 Crown Imperial up to 155mph with a 440 magnum and an edelbrock top end. It was like traveling in space , giant star ship absolutely no noise, ridiculously strange to be going that fast in a 2ton vehicle!
Also been to 120mph in a Buick 225 sport it was great, 455 stage 2.
You guys with your little go carts have an easy time making them fast.

Had a Nissan 240sx once, would do 124mph in a 1/4 mile with a 5spd. Hit 160mph and back down to 35mph in a mile one night too. That was fun. Had enough gearing for 180mph at 8000rpm roughly so was about topped out.

Should add it only had a 2.0L 4 cylinder in it too.

Ya lightweight helps be quick, but a hellcat at 4500 lbs is still quick and fast!

What did it run in the quarter? I have a 2 mile strait leaving town, it’s pretty easy to get up to 140 and back to 55 In the first 1/2 to 5/8 of a mile. I like the 240’s

My cousin built an Open GT with a 340 Dodge motor in it, but he took it out once and would not drive it again.

My older half-brother had 2 Jag XKEs, one with a small block Chevy, one with a small block Ford.

The 67/68 Mustang and 68 Cudas were some of the lightest cars that came with Big Blocks.

I remember seeing a 68 Hemi Cuda at the track. Was a National record holder in the SS class and was running in the 9s, very impressive!

Also remember seeing a 68 Mustang with a 427 Ford engine, and a 67 Fairlane with a 427 Ford engine that were both tearing up the competition.

My Bow Tie buddies were all torn apart when the 427 Fairlane beat the 454 Chevelle.

The good old days, when you had to know how to launch and shift, no electronics to do it for you!

best was a 12.1@121. Was not setup for drag racing at all so launches were slow with a bad 60’. Big turbo and lag…but once it was moving it was fun! Put down 500 to the wheels on a dynojet and 27 psi of boost.

Since we're talking muscle care era. Everything in school parking lot had 300hp in late 60,s. While in service I picked up a 69 mustang 428super cobra jet with shaker scoop ramair, drag Pac 430,s Detroit locker. Every rod was knocking and the Dodge dealer sold it to me as junk. Talk about hole shots. It sets in weeds behind barn with a 70 mach one and 69 289 gt.
