i used to work for a guy that worked at ford areospace in the 60's he is an engineer of sorts he was recruited before he could even go to college. He work on all of the appolo missions and lots of top secret military stuff. Anyway they came to him one day and asked him to design an engine for racing applications it was a 1000hp ford 427 the order was for four engines. He did wat they asked hed made the plans and sent them off to be manufactured at the ford engine plant. when the order arrived there were five crates that showed up. when he met with his bosses their answer was we dont know what you are talking about we only see four crates. they knew that he had a 1957 tbird port hole hard top convertable that he raced. they told him that there wasnt any paperwork on that fifth engine. when he got it home and opened the crate there was a note that said thank your for you we know you will put this to good use. he set a world record at the bonneville salt flats that held for many years he drove that car over 205mph. he is in his 80s now and in the process of restoring the car back to as street car as it had been gutted for weight

That is a bad ass story! Love reading and watching stuff on the Bonneville salt flats racing because of the unique engineering and how it's mostly regular type people with a big dream.

after posting this last night prompted me to call them. i just had a nice long phone call. the car is only a couple of days from being done with the restoration he is waiting for a custom hose for the fill spout on the new tank to adapt to the original hole on the car. he has taken the dual quad off and put fuel injection on it which has de tuned it down to about 650hp.... lol if find that funny because he is 84 years old with his superfast car tuned down to superfast but a little slower

Had a Nissan 240sx once, would do 124mph in a 1/4 mile with a 5spd. Hit 160mph and back down to 35mph in a mile one night too. That was fun. Had enough gearing for 180mph at 8000rpm roughly so was about topped out.

Should add it only had a 2.0L 4 cylinder in it too.
I had a Datsun 260z with a fresh 280z motor. It had a Holley carb and intake custom made and a custom header. Fiberglass front. Performance suspension kit with all new coils. A stock 280z could go 135mph. My year 260 was lighter and shorter. That car would fly.

My brother brought my hybrid 260/280z to where he worked and his boss, who was the owner and founder of a fortune 500 company, asked to go for a spin in it. My brother liked driving like a race car driver and when the spin was over the boss told him that he wished the Ferrari he bought his daughter went like my car...wahoo my big claim to Fame.

By the way, I am no engine builder like you guys and have no where near the knowledge you guys do. My brothers both were gearheads. I was just the younger brother that put the car together to fit in with everyone because back in those days it was like I believe it was MustangMike said that done up muscle cars were everywhere. All the guys I knew and my brothers friends all had muscle cars and that is how we identified each other. I was the "Z Kid".

We took turns getting arrested! Lots of drag races down by the mall outside of Boston on a straight stretch of turnpike complete with traffic lights for a starting point. There would be hundreds of young people watching in the parking lot. Everything would shut down in a hurry when the cops finally got there.

My Z car caught the cops eye what with the offset hood scoop for the Holley. The good old days of live band night clubs and all nighters. 1970s and 1980s were the best!

Car story time...

Right before I divorced and lost a massive portion of my life...I had bought a 240 Volvo sedan. I equipped it with an 8.8 limited slip from a Ford explorer and a Magnum 360 and 46re from a dodge ram truck. A year later I was sitting on a home built 408 stroker with a RV cam, low tension barrel faced rings, drilled pistons...built trans. I couldn't tell you what it made after the engine work (extensive head work etc) and heavily modified drive line...but it embarrassed several vehicles worth ten times the money I had into it.

An unfortunate incident occurred where a local wrecking yard had the wrong address and they picked up and crushed my beloved Volvo. The owner of the scrap yard was utterly torn, he wept when he found out it was my play/drag car and it had been crushed. He also cut me a no questions asked check for the value of the car. He was upset about the mistake as I was...with all the work I had into the car.

For reference it would outrun a supercharged C5 vette til 120 mph...then the aerodynamic qualities of the vette would win lol an amusing car to say the least. I miss it. It was comfortable enough and quiet enough to take out to dinner and enjoy friendly conversation in, and savage enough to make a naturally aspirated 911 or camaro or corvette blush from light to light. She was a good girl, I miss her.

I hear any of the old Mustang Fastback bodies are also off the charts!

Thankfully I'm happy with what I got ... but every now and then I do think about it ... I can build an FE Ford engine with my eyes closed!

But it is nice to have power windows and AC, and the look of my 2006 is pretty close! As soon as they came out with that body style (in 2005) I knew I had to have one ... but the first year they were going for over sticker, and my color came out in 2006 (the 2005 was a purple blue I was not fond of).

I got rid of my 2000 Zinc Yellow GT Feature Car (only 917 were made) to get this one. No regrets.

If the 427 fe was the boss, you should be missing her more….just giving you a hard time. Had and ex that we got an 03 gt 5 speed, was a good all around car. Was a decently balanced car for the day. Definitely fun to put miles on her

The 240sx was badged 180sx down here and they had the SR20DET.
This is my missus 93 european import badged 200sx all original come factory with the CA18DET. Was imported into Australia in 94.
They are paying crazy money for nice examples here now day's..
I'd personally not own a new Nissan a lot are just rebadged Renault rubbish now lol

In its day it was the motor to have, and I had one, but technology moves on. But, my 4.6 (now a 4.9) has a lot of the tech developed by the 427, plus more.

My little motor has cross bolted mains ... just like the ones pioneered by the 406 and 427. Also has overhead cams, again pioneered by the 427.

But my little beast also has 3 vales per cylinder with variable cam timing and a Whipple Intercooled Twin Screw SC ... things that were not available back then. The two motors actually feel remarkably similar to drive, both have (had) great power from just above idle to redline, and the street performance of the 2 cars is nearly identical.

The big difference is I now get twice the gas mileage, partly due to the improved tech, and partly due to the 5 speed. I always wanted an overdrive in the old cars. If you never shift past 4th, you know why!

The 68 390 was faster than either of them and felt much different because of the aggressive cam, light body and sloppy suspension. It was not as user friendly to drive.

That thing is beautiful! Mine was a 96 so the s14 body style. I used to own a 91 hatchback with a sr20 swap and loved that car too.

Before that was the dodge. 2002 Cummins with a 6sp manual. Twin turbo and water/meth injection. Put down 727whp and 1440tq. Ran a 13.49@105mph in the 1/4 mile. Launching in 4wd with my heel on the brake, toe on the gas and slipping the dual disk clutch to build boost for the launch. Chirped all 4 tires when it left. Did some sled pulling with it too and won some events with it. 5FB69541-56D0-4143-8C53-20A1D674137F.jpegB9AED4C3-14E2-4F56-84BD-73F705466C89.jpeg 570ACFE4-2F38-4B8F-B202-53D525671595.jpeg

Was just giving you a hard time. An American manufacturer made a 420 ci , 32 valve, dual overhead cam, super charged. 8 cylinder, back in the 1920’s there isn’t much truely new today. Most tech has been around, it’s just isn’t always affordable to make. Any of the manufacturers could build amazing motors, but the bean counters and other things usually get in the way
