Getting back on topic, I agree with the other comments. For me, the 462s work better, but if you are going to be heavy handed with a long bar, the 500 makes more sense.

In the 462s defense, you don't have to replace the air filter with AM, it stays clean, it has instant throttle response, and cuts very fast. Considering that about 90% of the trees I cut don't exceed 20", it is perfect for me. I have 2 if them (one w/20" one w/24") and they are my "go to" saws.

Being "old school" I did have to chuckle when he said "no replacement for displacement" with a pic of a small block (even if it is stretched).

I used to always go with big blocks (390,428 CJ, 427 Ford), I've had them all in Mustangs (the current one is Mustang #10).

But, the Whipple Twin Screw SC w/3V heads and VCT may change your opinion on that. With the Eagle Crank, Rods and Pistons it is only 4.9 liter, but puts out approx 550 Hp and very drivable, and with the 5 speed can get 24 MPG on the highway.

I would love to build an old fashion FE big block, and I can do them with my eyes closed, but every time I compare them to what I have, the project gets shelved!
Most 4x4’s I see these days are 6-cylinder….some with turbos. Seems like manufacturers are going with smaller displacement engines but adding turbos to help with performance.

Turbos certainly can be more efficient, but I think they are much harder to do right and are best left to the factory. My Mustang did not come with a SC, it was only 300 Hp from the factory.

Reasons I chose to go with a SC instead of a Turbo:

Ford Performance did the tune for them, so they are 50 State emissions legal and drive impeccably.

The SC oil is self contained, turbos use the engine's oil so they degrade it faster.

The twin screw is the efficient compromise. It does not have the low end grunt of the roots, or the high end of the centrifugal, but it is strong from 1,000 RPMs to red line, and far more efficient than a roots (and generally lots more low end grunt than a turbo).

It really feels like a well built big block. It feels very similar to when I put the built 427 Ford motor in the 70 Boss 302 body with BFG radial T/As all around. But now I have a 5th gear, power windows and AC!

I really wanted a 427 for my 92’ 4x4 but the cost exceeded my budget (set by the wife). Couldn’t complain since I just purchased several guns (>$5K) before my engine & transmission purchase. Going from my factory 350/5.7L (220 HP) to my 383/6.3L (448 HP) was a big improvement. Probably HP increase is a more accurate description than displacement. Torque increase very noticeable in my new engine.

Why are you guys hopping up your trucks and cars with superchargers, cams and heads if there’s no replacement for displacement?
Because once you put a 580ci V6 in a pickup, you've pretty much hit the displacement ceiling for practical engine swaps. Fyi, the 580 V6 isn't mine but it's what a neighbor ran in his '69 K20 pull truck/DD.

New tundra is turbo v6. I hate change like that. Old set up was tried and true. If it's not broken, fix it till it is I suppose right.
A friend just bought a new silverado 1/2 ton. Has a turbo 4- banger in it...looks like a truck, sounds like a honda civic lol.

I’d rather have the 4.3 v6 and live with the power loss rather than that 4cylinder ecoboom if I had to choose between the two. Good thing I don’t have to choose between those two :).

My F-150 has the 2.7 V-6 bi turbo. Does not have a high towing capacity, but plenty of pep and great gas mileage ... I'm very please with it.

It also has the 10 speed auto, which I'm sure helps the little engine feel bigger!

I have the same truck, so far I like it. I don’t tow heavy loads anymore, but make a lot more trips(son plays travel ball).

I’ve run the 500i for almost a year now, except June-Sept as I don’t like the heat.

I really like the saw, it’s lighter and handles better than the 046-460 ported by CFB.

After the excitement of running it most of the winter, I have now gone back to using the 2152/2159 and 2171 for smaller trees and limbing as the weight was starting to get to this old boy.

My brother has the 3.5 with the 10 speed I'm very impressed to say the least.

I’d rather have any of the new ford motors than the 5.4 triton I used to have. It wouldn’t pull a dildo out of a lard bucket. Giggity. Lol. The truck itself was good in that generation of f150. But the motor and tranny were trash. With a ecoboost or hemi in it with a 8 speed… it would have been a beast.

The 4.6 was a solid engine, especially after they got the intake manifold and cam chain worked out, spark plugs were still and issues if you weren't careful. The 5.4 had a few good years, but mostly that was trash, they would fix one issue and cause a whole new one.

Yeah small multi turbo engines with a gazillion speed transmission and tons of electronics is great when it's great. Wait till it has issues. When it's at the dealer for a month or 3. I'll take the older stuff I can repair myself and sacrifice some power and fuel mileage. Diesel trucks are a sh!t show. I know more people with new $70k trucks that can't keep them out of the shop and they need them for work. It all stems from emissions, epa, politics, etc. I'll stop now before I get too deep lol.
